It follows an ann-ouncement by the low budget Irish carrier that it will lay on three return flights a day to London Stansted and Dublin.

The new services have been welcomed by Richard Muir, the deputy chief executive at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, which represents around 2000 city businesses.

He says the decision strengthens the city's appeal as a place "to invest, visit, work and play".

He added: "Ryanair's announcement is crucial for the continuing growth and prosperity of the city.

"The new routes to London and Dublin will be popular with business passengers, offering greater choice in terms of time and cost.

"These airports are important for onward connections to Europe and further afield, which should also attract more visitors to Scotland."
