PROFESSIONAL boxer Jonathan Slowey has been cleared of attacking his ex-girlfriend.

The 24-year-old went on trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court accused of assaulting Jacqueline Smith on Boxing day last year.

Miss Smith, 28, who was in a relationship at the time with Slowey, claimed he pulled her by the hair, pinned her onto the floor and tried to to silence her screams for help.

The self-employed beauty therapist claimed she had to flee from her Barlanark home through her living room window.

Slowey, from Glasgow, denied the incident on December 26, 2013 and lodged a special defence of self-defence.

But after the prosecution lead evidence, defence lawyer Laura Greer successfully argued there was an insufficient amount.

The sheriff upheld the submission made by her and Slowey walked free from the dock.

Miss Smith told the jury that Slowey had spent Christmas day with her and her children but had been drinking on the few days leading up to it.

She said that at night when it was only her and a drunk Slowey in the house she went to a neighbour's for "rest-bite".

The mum-of-two said that eventually Slowey was asked to the neighbour's house so she could go home and lock the door with him away.

She claimed he had taken keys and let himself in before shouting at her from the top of the stairs in her house.

Miss Smith said she went up some of the stairs after he shouted and swore at her and alleged "He forcefully dragged me up the last two steps."

She told procurator fiscal depute Harry Findlay she was dragged by the hair into the bathroom and ended up in the bath.

Asked how she got there she said: "He pushed me in to the bath, full force right in to the bath."

She alleged her hit head hit off the taps in the bath.

Miss Smith told he court: "I had hit my head quite bad at that point."

The court heard Slowey was standing over his then-partner, laughing.

She claimed he pulled her out of the bath and there was a struggle and he called her a "drama queen".

The alleged victim said she pushed passed him and tried to run down the stairs and he grabbed her from behind and went down the stairs with her.

The court was told she made for the front door at the bottom of the stairs but it was locked and the keys were in the living room.

Miss Smith said: "Mr Slowey grabbed me forcefully and pulled me to the ground and smothered me with things at the side of the door.

"Christmas paper, bin bags, everything was lying there. He was now on top of me at this point."

She claimed she shouted for help and he covered her mouth and told her to stop screaming.

The mum said she managed to free herself from him and run to the back door but he again stopped her.

Miss Smith told the jury she escaped out of living room window because "it was the only other way" out of the house.

She claimed Slowey grabbed her as she dived out head-first but the window shut on her leg and she was able to run to a neighbour's house.

Featherweight boxer Slowey was banned from the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2009 after testing positive for cannabis.

He has since said he has changed his ways and concentrates on boxing to keep him away from any temptations.

He has three professional titles and recently beat Simas Volosinas at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on December 14.
