Joseph Townsley, 63, crashed his Ford Iveco truck through the gates of amateur boxer Frank Baxter's home in Newmains, Lanarkshire, in May 2012.
He was arrested and charged with murder after Mr Baxter, 23, died - he had fallen backwards and hit his head on a wall.
The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Townsley drove to Mr Baxter's parents' house with the intention of confronting him over a family bust up.
Mr Baxter was celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary on the night he died.
Last month, a jury at the High Court in Livingston convicted him on the lesser charge of culpable homicide.
Sentence had been deferred for the court to obtain reports about Townsley's character.
