A BUNGLING armed robber who admitted : "I'm as guilty as sin" to police was jailed for four years.

At the High Court in Glasgow 40-year-old John Sherlock admitted raiding Nan's Dairy on Shettleston Road armed with a knife and taking £360 on December 18 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to pushing brave shop manager Denise Murray - who tried to tackle him - to the ground and struggling with her.

The court heard the robbery was seen by three police officers on the first floor at Shettleston police office - which is across the road from the shop.

They gave chase and caught him a short distance away.

He told them: "I'm guilty as sin."

The robbery took place at 5pm as staff were about to close up for the day.

Sentencing Sherlock, judge Lord Burns said: "This must have been a terrifying ordeal."

Advocate depute Lisa Gillespie said: "Employee Alison Smith looked up and saw the accused John Sherlock standing in the shop.

"She was about to tell him that the shop was closing, but noticed that he was holding a knife.

"He grabbed £360 from the till and Ms Smith shouted to Ms Murray, 'He's got a knife.'

"Ms Murray then grabbed the accused and struggled with him, and was pushed and fell to the ground."

Sherlock told police he had carried out the robbery to get money for his drug habit. The £360 in notes was found in his front left trouser pocket.

Solicitor advocate Liam Ewing, defending, said: "He apologises to the shop workers for the ordeal he put them through."
