A TAXI driver has been seriously injured in a collision between his cab and a bin lorry in a Glasgow street.

The accident occurred in busy Shettleston Road in the East End.

A 48-year-old woman passenger in the cab was also injured in the crash which happened yesterday at 11.45am.

The 60-year-old taxi driver suffered a serious leg injury and head injuries as a result of the smash which ripped the door from his cab and left the vehicle badly damaged.

Both driver and passenger were taken to the city's Royal Infimary. The driver is expected to remain in hospital for several days but his injuries were said not to be life-threatening.

The woman was released after treatment and the driver of the bin lorry was not injured.

Shettleston Road was closed following the accident while the vehicles were removed and debris was cleared. Traffic between the junctions of Dalveen Street and Fernan Street was diverted to Old Shettleston Road.

The cab driver was not part of the Glasgow Taxis fleet and is believed to have been a sole operator.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "The taxi driver sustained head and leg injuries and is expected to remain in hospital for a couple of days.

"A 48-year-old woman was also injured but was released from hospital after treatment."
