Calls for swift action over airport link

BUSINESS leaders have called on the Scottish Government to take "swift action" to ensure a rail link between Glasgow Airport and the city centre is delivered.

As reported in yesterday's Evening Times, Transport Minister Keith Brown revealed a review into surface access to the airport - to be published in the coming days - would say the best long term option was a tram and train link.

He also said the immediate solution to improved access is better buses between the airport and Paisley Gilmour Street Station, but added that he would ask officials to investigate the possibility of a tram and train link.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce held a meeting with Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to discuss concerns that the Government's purchase of Prestwick Airport might impact on Glasgow Airport.

Mr Patrick said he was content with assurances from Ms Sturgeon and that he welcomed the announcement from Mr Brown. He said: "We had a very productive meeting, out of which came commitments from the Deputy First Minister to provide the Chamber with a guidance paper on the National Aviation Strategy, that she would meet with Chamber members to discuss this strategy, and that the Chamber would be provided with an update regarding surface access to Glasgow Airport.

"Therefore, given the announcement by Transport Minister Keith Brown that trams that run on rail lines are to be considered for a new link, we now look forward to working with relevant agencies to encourage the swift delivery of a selected option."
