Patricia Brown, 52, was a passenger in a car that collided head on with another vehicle on the B769 near Stewarton on Sunday evening.

Ms Brown, from Stewarton, was in a Peugeot 206 being driven by a 64-year-old man who survived the crash.

Two 18-year-old men were travelling south in a Vauxhall Corsa when they collided with the northbound Peugeot 206 at around 6.30pm.

The driver of a Fiat 500 travelling behind the Corsa swerved to avoid the crash and overturned.

The passenger in the Corsa is in a critical condition at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock with head and shoulder injuries.

The driver suffered shoulder and arm injuries and was said to be in a stable condition.

The 18-year-old Fiat driver escaped with an arm injury.

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses and inquiries are continuing into the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist from Glasgow killed in a crash on Skye on Sunday has been named as Alexander Brown. The 33-year-old from Shawlands died after the incident on the A87 road at Drumnacloch near Luib at around 9.30am.

In the West of Scotland, a spate of early morning road accidents caused travel chaos for motorists yesterday.

An overturned lorry caused tailbacks on the M80 after it toppled between the Castlecary and Haggs junctions and in Irvine, another smash saw three people taken to hospital.

The two-car crash on the A736 at Torranyard happened at around 6.40am yesterday.

Two people were taken to Crosshouse hospital, while a third was removed by the Helimed air ambulance.
