A CAT was dumped and left to die in a wheelie bin.

The cat, called Bridie, was discovered by a member of the public inside a pet carrier inside the bin on Saturday.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information following the discovery in Ness Drive, East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire.

The feline is now in the care of the charity's Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton, where she was named Bridie.

Animal rescue officer Dawn Lowdon said: "The man who called us said he heard noises coming from his bin early on Saturday morning.

"He got a shock when he looked inside and found a cat carrier with Bridie inside.

"It's unlikely Bridie had been in there long, although she would have undoubtedly been very scared.

"This was an extremely cruel thing to do. It's only by chance Bridie was found and it was very lucky she was not emptied with the rest of the rubbish.

"We'll continue to care for Bridie until we can find her the loving new home she deserves."

Anyone who recognises Bridie is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
