A Celtic fan who made monkey gestures towards Rangers player El Hadji Diouf during an Old Firm game has been jailed for three months.

Racist Sean Smith taunted the Senegalese forward as he took a corner kick for the Ibrox side in February.

The 19-year-old was reported to police by fellow Celtic fans who were disgusted by his behaviour and was later arrested after his photograph appeared in a Sunday newspaper.

Sentencing Smith at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Sheriff Lindsay Wood told Smith that his actions that day were "despicable".

Sheriff Wood said: "You have pleaded guilty to what I consider to be despicable racist behaviour. You thought you were making a fool of the player but you were actually making a fool of yourself.

"You have brought shame on the club you support and on Scottish football generally.

"I note that you had been drinking before the game, you had five cans of Strongbow, and I'd like to tell you that that is no way to go to a football match and appreciate it.

"I have to look at these matters in the context of an Old Firm match where tensions are running high and I can see no alternative to a custodial sentence to mark the court's disapproval of such behaviour."

Sheriff Wood also banned Smith from attending football matches for five years.

At an earlier hearing, Smith, of Carrick Road, Spittal, Rutherglen, admitted committing a racially aggravated breach of the peace at Celtic Park on February 20.

Defence lawyer Raymond McIlwham told the court his client has received death threats as a result of what he did.

Mr McIlwham said: "Mr Smith's name has entered cyber space and this case has received some press coverage and he has been on the end of death threats as a result of it."

The lawyer added that his client is ashamed and now "deeply regrets" what he did.
