RAIL commuters faced chaos today when train services in and out of Glasgow were cancelled because of damaged power lines.

Overhead wires, which carry up to 25,000 volts of electricity, are understood to have come down overnight at Bowling.

And the damage continued to cripple rail services this morning, causing travel misery.

Network Rail Engineers were on site shortly after the damage occurred, but it is thought disruption will last until at least noon.

ScotRail was forced to cancel a number of trains which run across the West of Scotland.

Services between Balloch and Airdrie were completely withdrawn, and trains travelling between Helensburgh and Dumbarton were also affected.

Commuters travelling between Helensburgh and Edinburgh were also affected.

Meanwhile, passengers who travel from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig were advised that the service would start at Helensburgh Upper station.

A shuttle bus services are in place between Glasgow and Helensburgh Upper and passengers are being asked to check the ScotRail website for information.

Services between Milngavie and Edinburgh will pick up passengers at Shettleston, while trains between Dalmuir and Cumbernauld, via Springburn, will start at Partick.

Replacement buses are being provided wherever possible.

Customers with valid tickets can travel on First Glasgow local bus services for the route shown on their ticket, travel bosses said.
