A meat factory has been evacuated after a suspected ammonia leak.

Firefighters were called to the Hall's of Scotland plant in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, at around 4.40am.

Crews entered the Glenburn Road premises to isolate the leak after the night shift staff were accounted for.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The site manager briefed firefighters on the building's contents and our crews have been working with Glasgow Scientific Services to monitor the atmosphere.

"No injuries have been reported."

Hall's is a large producer of sausages, haggis and black pudding.

Incident commander Lawson Elliot said firefighters in specialist suits closed off a valve before returning to the building to identify a second leak.

He said: "Continued monitoring showed ammonia levels inside the building remained high.

"Our team re-entered the premises and they successfully traced and isolated a further leak, which led to ammonia levels decreasing."

After ventilation of the factory employees were able to return shortly before noon.
