GLASGOW will today appoint its first champion to represent the thousands of unsung heroes in the city who care for a family member.

Councillors are expected to give the position to Christopher Mason, who served as a Liberal/Democrat councillor for 30 years until his retiral in May.

He will be responsible for listening to the views of carers and working with the organisations that represent their interests.

The appointment will fulfil a pledge in Labour's manifesto for the city elections in May.

According to the 2001 census, it is estimated there are more than 55,000 carers in Glasgow, although the actual figure could now be considerably higher.

They can range from primary pupils who look out for a sick or disabled parent to pensioners caring for a husband or wife with dementia.

In some cases, carers will be responsible for two or more people with a variety of long-term health conditions.

A report to councillors says the carers' champion, which will be an unpaid role, must be independent, listen to what carers have to say about what would make their lives better and pass that information to the council.

Social work executive spokesman Matt Kerr said: "It is impossible to underestimate the importance of carers within our health and social care system.

"They are the ones who are there day after day providing vital care and support to their family members, many of whom will be the most vulnerable in society.

"The carers' champion will be an independent voice but will work closely with social care services to push things forward.

"We think Dr Mason is the ideal choice for his role. He is also renowned for his work in supporting groups with complex care needs."

Mr Mason, who represented Partick West until the election, said he became interested in issues involving carers through regular contact with a centre for people with learning difficulties.

He added: "I hope to be doing more listening than talking and have set myself various targets, the first of which is to meet carers' groups where they operate and hear what they have to say.

"I also need to become better acquainted with the organisations that represent their interests.

"After six months I will have a clearer view of how I shall apply my energies."
