A GLASGOW couple got a very special present when their son became the West of Scotland's first Christmas baby of the year.

Benjamin Smith was born at 1.07am yesterday at the Princess Royal Maternity wing of Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

And parents Charlene Nicolay- Smith and Kieran Smith, from Kelvindale, were over the moon at the precious bundle.

Benjamin, their first child, weighed 7Ib5oz and came a few days earlier than expected.

He was due on January 3, but came as a special Christmas surprise instead.

Speaking at the hospital, proud dad Kieran, 31, said: "We are just pleased he is healthy and safe. It is a bonus that he is the Christmas baby."

Mum Charlene, 27, held little Benjamin while he slept in her arms.

She added: "I think Christmas is on hold this year. We will do our presents tomorrow."

Grandparents Alfie and Susan Smith and Kieran's sisters Luci and Sophy Smith, from Cambuslang, visited the couple at the hospital yesterday.

Alfie, 56, said: "It is fantastic, he is the best present ever."

Eight-year-old Luci, and 14-year-old Sophy were delighted to be aunties for the first time.

Luci said: "I was surprised, but he is a bit of an extra treat at Christmas."

The extended family said they planned to leave the proud parents to rest while they headed home for their Christmas dinner.
