AIRDRIE is to get its first foodbank.O pened in partnership with The Trussell Trust, Calderbank Parish Church will host Airdrie Foodbank.

Alex Neil MSP will open the centre today with Pamela Nash MP, Councillor David Fagan and Jim Robertson, from The Trussell Trust.

Airdrie Foodbank project manager David Findlay said: "After six months of planning it is great to be getting the project open to the public and help those in the Airdrie and surrounding area who require our assistance.

"I would like to thank the local community, who have come forward in many ways to support the foodbank by volunteering, donations of food and financial donations.

"In addition, we have received great support and advice from the Trussell Trust."

Scotland Network Manager for The Trussell Trust, Ewan Gurr, added: "While we do not celebrate the need that exists in Scotland, we do unashamedly celebrate the way communities respond to that need and we are delighted to partner with Calderbank Parish Church to formally open the first Trussell Trust foodbank in North Lanarkshire.

"They are joining together with 46 other foodbanks in Scotland to support individuals and families experiencing food poverty and raising awareness of this serious issue."
