THE future is uncertain for a memorial created with the support of Sir Winston Churchill to remember the air crew who died in the Battle of Britain after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) decided its £50,000-a-year running cost was not "the most appropriate" way of spending its budget.

An e-petition launched against the proposal by the MoD to "relinquish ownership" of St George's Chapel of Remembrance on the site of the former RAF station at Biggin Hill in Kent has passed 10,000 signatories.

The names of those who died in the battle are inscribed on a roll of honour inside the chapel, which Sir Winston urged should be kept as a permanent memorial.
