GLASGOW is set to shine as city bosses promote our world class sporting and cultural events.

After a public consultation, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau chose the slogan People Make Glasgow to promote the city to the world.

Now the first stage of the campaign is about to launch as marketing bosses say: Let's Celebrate.

Gordon Matheson, the bureau's chairman, said: "Glasgow enjoys an enviable reputation for winning and delivering major events on a truly global scale.

"We are recognised as one of the world's top 10 sporting cities and over the next two years we can look forward to a packed schedule of the most exciting events the city has seen.

"We are entering an extraordinary period for Glasgow, with just one year to go until the Commonwealth Games and some of the world's best events set to take place on our doorstep. This is our time to shine, so let's celebrate."

The city attracts 2.2million tourists each year, who are said to generate £578million for the local economy.

Many come to attend major events such as Celtic Connections, Glasgow Film Festival, Glasgow International Comedy Festival, the Merchant City Festival, Piping Live! and the World Pipe Band Championships.

As well as the 2014 Games coming to the city, Glasgow is gearing up to host the Turner Prize and the World Artistic Gymnastic Championships in 2015 and the World Irish Dancing Championships in 2016.

The council wants to push tourism and major events as growth areas for the city to attract thousands more tourists.

Mr Matheson said: "Glasgow has a fantastic portfolio of annual events and festivals as well as a rich variety of theatres, concert halls, venues and performance spaces, which are all expanding and improving.

"Let's Celebrate is about ensuring the people of Glasgow and the many visitors to our city are aware of the breadth of great events taking place over the coming year and beyond."

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau chief executive Scott Taylor, right, said the slogan was perfect after he received a grateful e-mail from an American tourist.

Mary Tull, from Pennsylvania, wrote to him to tell how she had been on holiday in Glasgow and had lost her wallet.

After a busy day sightseeing, she had not yet noticed her wallet was gone – but she received an e-mail from local man Richard Donaldson to say he had found it.

Mary said: "I promptly contacted the Good Samaritan to express my gratitude and since we were still in the city he further overwhelmed us with his hospitality by driving to our hotel to deliver my lost items.

"Now I can be a pretty forceful woman and usually have no trouble handling young men around the age of my own son, 30, but the only reward I could get him to accept was a motherly hug.

"Richard Donaldson's truly selfless deed brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

"How proud Glasgow – and his mom – should be of this upstanding young man."
