HUNDREDS of thousands of Glasgow residents are facing a high speed broadband blackout because of where they live.

Only 60% of the city is able to access fast broadband, leaving 240,000 people in the slow lane.

And today one resident hit out over the "postcode lottery" of speed variations.

Tom Chard spoke out after discovering his new home, in Minerva Way, Finnieston, had no access to superfast broadband.

The 28-year-old bank worker said: "There's a massive demand for this and I don't know why a city like Glasgow – the biggest city in Scotland –doesn't have high speed connections.

"It's definitely a postcode lottery."

His comments came after a uSwitch study found there was 85% difference between the fastest and slowest broadband speeds in Glasgow.

Commercial providers say 80% of Glasgow will have superfast access by 2015.

However, due to the unprofitability of 100% connectivity, 20% of homes will still be in the slow lane.

City Centre and Anderston councillor Nina Baker questioned why Glasgow's so-called Silicon Corridor could not provide the connectivity.

She said: "If Glasgow has ambitions to be a world-class city, we need full coverage for superfast broadband.

"Finnieston is the city's Silicon Corridor, with O2 based in Skypark, many IT-businesses, and IT-savvy residents in the area.

"I am calling for the council and government to assemble the necessary finance to ensure 100% coverage."
