A SHIRT shop with outlets in London, Washington and New York, is opening a new store in Glasgow.

London-based Charles Tyrwhitt will open a second Scottish store in Buchanan Street.

The new store will open its doors to the public on November 8, creating around a dozen new jobs.

Charles Tyrwhitt is Britain's biggest mail-order shirt company with sales of more than £100 million.

The firm sells a wide range of men's clothing, including business and dress suits, shirts and ties as well as a women's wear range.

It was launched by Nick Wheeler, who sold his first shirt while still a student at Bristol University in 1986.

The flagship store is based in London's prestigious Jermyn Street.

Mr Wheeler said: "Our aim is to open a small number of prestigious stores in the very best locations.

"We don't want to have a store on every street. We just want to be the best shirt-maker.

"There is a real appetite for our products in Scotland and we wanted to ensure our loyal customers in Glasgow had a store to call their own.

"We are delighted to be opening on Buchanan Street, which is one of the busiest shopping streets I've ever come across."

The Glasgow store brings the total number of Charles Tyrwhitt stores to 20, with flagship outlets in Washington and New York's Madison Avenue as well as London.

The company opened its first Scottish store last year in Edinburgh's George Street.

Plans are also on course for a £310m expansion of Buchanan Galleries, which is expected to create 1500 jobs and boost the city's economy by £36m each year.

As well as the 400,000 extension to the shopping centre, there will be a further 50,000sq ft of new retail units at the southern end of the Buchanan Galleries site.
