a new shop will sell jewellery and clothing designed by Glasgow college students - and help young carers.

The shop aims to raise awareness of the barriers young people face in getting into education and has received backing from First Minister Alex Salmond.

Called P-OP SHOP (the pop-up shop of opportunity), it is based in the Charles Oakley Building, at the City Of Glasgow College, and is a scheme run by students from the NC Advertising and Public Relations, NQ Fashion Merchandising and NQ Retailing courses.

It will also raise funds for the Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers Initiative. Young carers in education experience many issues due to their financial, personal and social circumstances.

The shop was opened by MSP Bob Doris.

Mr Salmond said: "Young people in Scotland should not face any barriers to their education. That is why schemes such as this are so important because they give young people a chance to challenge barriers and offer a real taste of business and the opportunity to get involved with their community.

"I wish every success to all involved with this fantastic idea."

Student Shaun Murphy, who is studying advertising and public relations at the college, said: "We are all going to gain work experience and knowledge of how to work in our chosen field.

"The main aim of it is to draw positive attention and raise money for the Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers Initiative."

Local celebrities and businesses, including X Factor finalist Nicholas MacDonald, Rangers' player Lee McCulloch, Glasgow Film Theatre, The Tunnel nightclub and comedy venue The Stand, have supported the shop by donating competition prizes.

April Walker, the Young Carers development officer, added: "We hope the experience our young carers gain from their involvement in this will give them a flavour of student life and will inspire them to consider further education."

Mr Doris said: "I am delighted to be involved in this fantastic initiative. It will give many students their first practical experience in their chosen field while also contributing to their qualifications."
