SOME of Glasgow's finest Indian restaurants have been short-listed to take the crown at this year's Scottish Curry Awards.

More than 8000 nominations were made from all over the country to various categories, which celebrate the best Indian restaurants across Scotland.

For the Best in Glasgow category, the city centre's Kama Sutra, Akbar's, Charcoals, and Masala Twist, are all up for the prize.

Joining them in the stakes are the Shish Mahal, Mother India's Cafe, Chillies and Balbir's in the West End and the Merchant City's Koolba and Cafe India.

Other nominees include the Killermont Polo Club and Giffnock's Turban Tandoori who are up for Team of the Year.

Purvaiz Mohammed from Heera in Finnieston is up for Chef of the Year, while Muhammad Sultan from Charcoal's and Mark Singh from Mister Singh's India are up for Maitre D' of the Year.

The judges will now visit all the short-listed contenders to decide who will come first in their relevant categories.

A Curry King or Queen and Lifetime Achievement award will also be presented, but will stay under wraps until the night of the ceremony.

Event organiser Yasmin Mahmood said: "This year we have added a few categories to spice things up and received a great response to these new editions, as thousands of nominations flooded in, in support of the public's favourite.

"We wish all the finalists the best of luck and I am sure it will be fantastic evening."

Now in its sixth year, the awards will be held on June 10 at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow, and will include a five-course meal and live entertainment.

It will raise money for the Well Foundation, which builds wells and provided clean, accessible water to stricken regions around the world.
