A DECISION on plans to build a £400million extension to Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries shopping mall could be taken in as little as eight weeks.

Developers, Land Securities, has submitted a detailed planning application to the council for the retail and leisure proposal, which would create 1500 jobs.

If the plans get the go ahead, the centre would be home to more than 100 shops, a cinema and 25 restaurants.

It is understood the proposal will be considered by councillors in the new year.

If it gets the green light, building work would start in spring next year and be completed by early 2016.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "I can confirm that an application has been received and will be considered in due course."

The expanded centre would be anchored by two major flagship stores - a new 150,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer, and a reconfigured 300,000 sq ft John Lewis.

The extension would also give a major jobs boost and is expected to attract new business to the area.

The proposal includes a controversial plan to demolish the popular Royal Concert Hall steps to create a new entrance atrium to the mall.

Campaigners have launched a petition in a bid to save steps, which are used by lunchtime diners, people watchers and as site for demonstrations.

However, the developers say the new plans will provide improved access to the Concert Hall.

In front of the atrium a "gathering place" will be created, with new public art and lighting, as well as seating.

The Donald Dewar statue will remain in the same spot.

Nick Davis, development director at Land Securities, said: "We are extremely excited to bring forward the planning application to extend and enhance Buchanan Galleries, which demonstrates our focus on customer experience and convenience.

"This £400m investment will create the very best shopping environment in one of the UK's top retail destinations."
