GLASGOW'S Riverside Museum has been crowned Europe's best.

It was named European Museum of the Year at a ceremony in Belgium to mark International Museums Day.

Scotland's Museum of Transport and Travel was among 40 museums from 21 countries to enter the running for the prestigious award and among 29 making it through to final judging.

The venue, run by Glasgow Life, was said by judges to be at the "highest level" of quality.

In their commendation the Judges said: "The Riverside Museum demonstrates brilliantly how a specialist transport collection can renew its relevance through active engagement with wider social and universal issues.

"The EMYA 2013 Judging Panel agreed unanimously that the museum fulfils the criteria of 'public quality' at the highest level."

The award is judged on public quality, the extent to which a museum satisfies the needs and wishes of its visitors, and was presented in Tongeren in Belgium on Saturday.

Councillor Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "Our fantastic Riverside Museum has been crowned Europe's best. That is no accident and is down to the hard work, passion and creativity of our staff."

The Zaha Hadid-designed museum opened to the public in June 2011.
