COMMUNITY groups have benefited from £33,000 of funding in the first year of an initiative launched by businesses in Glasgow.

ARISE Glasgow is funded wholly by the businesses of the city's Buchanan Quarter and has already supported 35 good causes since it was launched last year.

It offers a source of funding support for community-based initiatives and activities in the Glasgow area.

The award enables groups to apply for funding for a wide range of reasons including new equipment for local sports teams, new playground facilities in schools, new computers for community centres, and a variety of education and training programmes.

To mark the milestone, the ARISE Glasgow Selection Committee visited successful funding recipient Nordoff Robbins Scotland.

Based in the Maryhill Community Centre, the charity provides music therapy to vulnerable children, young people and adults.

ARISE Glasgow supported the project with £1000 to develop a short promotional film raising awareness of the charity and the positive work being undertaken.

Carolyne Nurse, fundraising director at Nordoff Robbins Scotland, said: "We were delighted to receive support from ARISE Glasgow and the funding enabled us to create a professional film to show how music changes lives.

"Thanks to YouTube, the film has been seen by families far and wide including Romania and Mexico.

"We will continue to show it at every opportunity to help explain the inspiring work of Nordoff Robbins Scotland."

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, is the chairman of the ARISE Glasgow Selection Committee.

He said: "This is a fantastic initiative driven by businesses at the heart of the city.

"I am pleased to chair the selection committee and be associated with an initiative that supports so many good projects in and around Glasgow.

"It has been great to see such varied and creative applications over the past year encouraging people to gain new experiences and further their learning."

ARISE Glasgow, supported by the Buchanan Partnership, continues to seek applications from local community groups and organisations based in the Glasgow region.
