BUREAU OFFERING CASH ADVICE

PEOPLE on low incomes are getting advice on how to manage money.

Maryhill and Possilpark Citizens Advice Bureau has been given almost £10,000 to support a financial education project.

The Bureau's MoneyWise Project will give up to 1000 people advice on budgeting and getting the best deals from utility firms.

Staff from voluntary organisations will be trained in financial management, leading to a recognised qualification. The cash was awarded by the Santander Foundation.

Dominic Notarangelo, chairman of Maryhill and Possilpark Citizens Advice Bureau, said: "Many people in our area are under pressure financially and this project will offer them advice sensitively on budgeting, understand-ing types of credit and getting the best deals on necessities."

CAMPAIGNERS ARE UP FOR AWARD

A CAMPAIGNING duo have been shortlisted for a "local hero" award.

Emily Cutts, of the Children's Wood, and Douglas Peacock, of the North Kelvin Meadow Campaign, have been jointly short-listed in the Observer newspaper awards scheme. A shortlist of five was drawn up out of 300 entries nationwide.

Both Emily and Douglas are involved in trying to save a community garden, near Clouston Street, that Glasgow City Council wants to sell to a private property developer for 90 luxury flats.

A spokesman for the campaign said: "It is a very welcome recognition of all the hard work they have put in.

"They have of course immediately said that it is a team effort by the whole community, and so it is, but Emily and Douglas have by far the strongest vision and perseverance of us all."

HELP WITH WELFARE APPEALS

MARYHILL Housing Association has been providing a helping hand to tenants who are confused by welfare changes.

The association hosted an open day at its offices to assist tenants with 'bedroom tax' appeals.

Staff were able to help four tenants launch appeals against the changes and provided helpful advice to others.

Association chief executive Willy Briody said: "State benefits can be a complex and challenging subject for many people.

"Knowing what your entitlement is sometimes requires investigation and explanation so that people can claim what they are entitled to.

"It is part of our role in the community to help our tenants in this way."

LAMBHILL Stables is hosting a day of water- themed events for all the family.
