The 46-year-old has been indicted to appear at the High Court in Glasgow next month.

Prime Minister David Cameron's former spin doctor was charged with perjury by police in 2012 after being questioned in connection to his evidence at the 2010 Tommy Sheridan trial.

He appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June 2013 where he made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The Crown Office can confirm that an indictment was served on Andrew Coulson today and that a preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 6, 2014 at the High Court at Glasgow."

Mr Sheridan's perjury conviction stems from his defamation case against the News of the World in 2006.

The now defunct tabloid printed allegations about his private life, which included claims that he visited a swingers' club and cheated on his wife.

He was awarded £200,000 in damages after winning the case against the newspaper but in 2010 he was found guilty of perjury.

The 50-year-old is to take his case to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission in a bid to clear his name.
