A DRUGS courier was caught red-handed with heroin with a maximum street value of £210,000 after a police tip-off.

At the High Court in Glasgow Gary Niven, 24, of Hathaway Drive. Maryhill, admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin at the Broomielaw at 8.25am on January 12.

Advocate depute Jim Keegan, prosecuting, told the court that Niven was a passenger in a black Volkwagen Golf driving along the Broomielaw near to King George V bridge.

He added: "Police Scotland had received information and the car was brought to a halt by undercover officers and uniformed officers."

The court heard that Niven grabbed a plastic bag containing the heroin along with blocks of paracetamol and caffeine and ran off, but was caught in nearby Oswald Street.

The value of the heroin on its own was worth £70,000, but police experts said that if it was mixed with the blocks of paracetamol and caffeine, which was also seized, the maximum value would be £210,000.

Judge Lord Bannatyne deferred sentence on Niven until next month for sentence at the High Court at Livingston.
