The Save Abronhill High School pressure group has urged members of North Lanarkshire Council's Learning and Leisure Services committee to vote against proposals to close the school at today's meeting.

Council officers have recommended the committee vote to close the school – made famous in the 1980s film – and move the 480 pupils to Cumbernauld High a couple of miles away.Scott Campbell, a spokesman for Save Abronhill, said: "This is the point which we have been building towards – D-day.

"We would ask councillors stand side by side with the community, the parents, the students and the staff in rejecting these proposals which, if passed, would have a detrimental effect on the community and economy of Abronhill."

Last week, council officers recommended that councillors vote to close Abronhill High and merge it with Cumbernauld High, but also suggest the closure be delayed by a year.

It is understood the closure would save the council £1million a year. If the plan is approved, Cumbernauld High would later be replaced by a new school.
