DIABETES patients are being warned about festive food products.

Patients are advised not to buy 'diabetic' Christmas cake or chocolate.

The charity Diabetes Scotland said they offer no special benefit to people with diabetes and will still affect blood glucose levels.

The foods can contain just as much fat and calories as the ordinary versions and can also have a laxative effect.

More than 61,500 people in Greater Glasgow & Clyde living are living with diabetes.

Linda McGlynn, Head of Patient Engagement, at Diabetes Scotland, said: "We want everyone with diabetes to enjoy their Christmas and that doesn't mean denying yourself your favourite festive treats.

"The key is to plan and be mindful of how a treat may affect your blood glucose. Enjoy small amounts of ordinary festive foods and balance this with healthier recipes and snacks."
