A DISABILITY group featured on The Secret Millionaire are celebrating after netting a 50k funding boost.

As reported in the Evening Times, the Disability Community, in the north of Glasgow, appealed to the public for help to win the cash.

The Possilpark group was one of six finalists taking part in the People's Millions Big Lottery Fund, and discovered they had won the cash last week.

Now plans are in the pipeline to buy a minibus to help them accommodate all their members transport needs.

Staff at the charity, which help more than 300 disabled people across Glasgow, were left speechless when they found out they were the winners.

Melanie Fyffe, one of the centre coordinators, said: " It's just amazing, we can't believe it.

"We worked so hard to try and raise our profile and get people to vote.

"Some of our volunteers were working from 9am until 12 midnight trying t get people to vote for us.

"The money is going to make such a difference to the people who we help.

"All the members were so happy when we told them we'd won, especially as we were up against a much bigger organisation and we didn't think we would win."

The group went head-to-head with FABB Scotland's blazing saddles project to compete for the funding, but secured the cash after receiving the most votes from the public.

Their project aims to allow people with disabilities in the Callender area to get involved in cycling.

Volunteers visited local businesses, used social media and spoke to locals encouraging them to vote.

Melanie said: " Many of our members were really isolated before, they couldn't go out and we didn't have any transport or ramps to help get them to classes.

"This is unbelievable for us, and we can't thank everyone enough for voting for us."

The minibus will help the group take many of their members to clubs and workshops as they were unable to transport them before.

Jackie Killeen, Director Big Lottery Fund Scotland, said: "People's Millions is a great way for local people to get behind hard working projects doing great things for their communities. This is a brilliant result for the people of Possilpark in Glasgow and shows that local lives really can be changed by you."

In 2008, the centre took part in Channel 4's Secret Millionaire TV series, when property tycoon Nick Leslau spent time with service users and staff.

He later donated £225,000 to help with the group's work.

In February this year, the disability group was facing the axe due to a funding crisis.

They were saved from closure when Glasgow City Council stepped in and gave them an advance of next year's funding.
