PEOPLE who lose their hair while having cancer treatment are being helped by a new wig-making firm.

Angel Hair Designs is one of nearly 100 companies given backing by Pollok-based local development company Equip.

Wig stylist, Lesley Docherty, from Nitshill, discovered many Scots consider stopping chemotherapy treatment when faced with the possibility of losing their hair.

She approached Equip for help and set up her own wig styling business working with cancer and alopecia sufferers.

Lesley, who trained with top hair stylist Trevor Sorbie, now offers home visits for patients and will revamp NHS wigs or source pre-styled wigs.

She said: "It is hard to imagine what you would do if you woke up one morning and found your hair was falling out. It is difficult enough dealing with a severe illness but then to lose your hair which is the first thing people notice.

"One of my clients, whose son isn't aware that his mother is fighting cancer, was so troubled by the hair loss she was contemplating stopping her treatment. She didn't want her son to know she was ill.

"I am able to boost people's confidence by simply restyling wigs. So much can be done with wigs these days and this simple touch can make a world of difference for people."

Equip managing director Sandra Inrig said: "Lesley has done immensely well in creating her own business demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work and commitment.

"Equip has been able to assist, providing support and guidance and through Lesley's hard work she has turned her life around."

In the past year the development company helped a record 770 people into jobs - a 20% increase on the previous year.

It also launched the Pollok Accord, guaranteeing at least 150 local people will be employed and 20 apprenticeships and 100 work experience placements made available during the building of the massive Silverburn shopping centre.

Equip also helped 568 people get into education and training, assisted 92 companies - a jump of 46% - and has set up a new recruitment centre at Silverburn with specialist retail advisers geared up to handle the anticipated 30,000 job inquiries.

Lesley also offers a postal service for clients. Anyone suffering from hair loss can find out more by calling 0787 662 1102.
