TEENAGERS on the rundown Glasgow estate made famous by TV duo Colin and Justin are fighting back - with rap music.

Steg G, a rapper and record label owner who grew up in Arden, has helped the youngsters produce a single which has already been played on Radio 1 and is becoming a huge success on the internet.

The 29-year-old launched the project after becoming furious at the way the design duo portrayed his community in their Channel 5 programme.

Colin and Justin On The Estate documented the pair's work with Glen Oaks Housing Association, refurbishing flats and setting up a youth centre.

But the four-episode makeover show sparked a storm of controversy with many residents saying they had made Arden look bleaker than it is.

Steg G got together a group of Arden teenagers and urged them to use music to show themselves in a different light.

Thirty young people from the estate worked together to make a hip hop video that gives a "warts and all" tour round their scheme.

The single, The Schemes, is now up on internet video site YouTube and had an impressive 442 views in only a week, helped by being featured on Tim Westwood's Radio 1 show.

Steg G said: "The reason we made this video is because we wanted to show the other side of Arden, the creative side.

"Sure, life in Arden is grim, and us singing about it ain't really gonna change anything, but we've created an outlet to express ourselves, raise awareness of the issues facing people in schemes, and hopefully others will follow our example."

Steg G is a well-known face on the estate and motivated the Arden young people to express how they felt about the negative publicity the show generated.

Using resources from his own production company, Powercut Productions, the video took five days to shoot with many of the teenage stars having featured in Colin and Justin On The Estate.

Steg G added: "We're not trying to glamourise life in Arden, but we are trying to make it a little cooler for the young people there, because Arden makes world-class hip hop.

"And now because of The Schemes song being played on Radio 1 people as far away as Brighton are hearing about a different life in Arden."

Steg, who has rapped with 50 Cent and Kanye West, also runs a radio training scheme with Sunny Govan Radio, which he hopes can benefit Arden kids.

Its good to see rappers in Glasgow getting a mention for good things, I remember seeing Eastborn on your front cover because he was getting an ASBO, he and people like Steg dont get the respect they deserve from our newspapers and tv, great to see you cover Steg in a good light, I hope its the first many good coverage of us instead of demonising our boys!

betty dear u have to keep in mind that it is tv, and therefore has been manipulated for viewer intrest and ratings.. a little drama goes alongway if u know what im saying. improving the look of somewhere wont change the fact that many people aroung glasgow cant even afort to heat their homes or eat fresh food, painting someones close may be ok in the short term, but it wont help with the real social problems that are going on in scotland.. its a very small facelift !!!!!

betty has got a point, although I did not watch every episode I saw bits of it and those bits I did see had the children cursing and playing up for the cameras, just because the program makers decided to show this does not mean that Colin and Justin where taking advantage and showing the "best/worst" bits. the children should have been more well behaved, acting up for the cameras is one thing but their behaviour for the cameras was just disgusting and unacceptable and this was not Colin and Justin's doing it is the familes allowing this behaviour to happen. I do think that the lid has been lifted on the behaviour of these young people and the people of Arden do not like the look of it. But are they going to blame themselves - I think not.

Colin and Justin went to Arden with good honest intentions, "at we care enough to come down here and try and do something about it" i think Justine said. To say a lick paint wont change things in Arden is true but also misses the point having respect for where you leave leads to confidence that helps improves the quality of life, self respect and ambition.
It is not good enough to say 'why should i/we take care of my community because others don't,' thats what leads to an acceptance of vandalism and crime. And anyway are people saying the place better before they came, i think not.

i think the point i was maing was missed. i live in a "scheme" was the typical teen mother bla bla bla.. and ive worked hard to be where i am now what im saying is a lick of paint isnt going to inprove peoples lifes over the long term, nor is some one making their community look bad. the good thing about the above named song is its showing a community and showing the young people who live in that community that they can aspire to be what they want to be as the musicians r from the area and dont come off all patronising. yes i agree that the tv program was made to benifit these people but its still television and still manipulated !!

Allofus is correct, the schemeis appear to enjoy wallowing in their own mire. Colin and Justin have highlighted the area. Unless the people want to improve their lot then they never will.
