Tesco hits out at ‘abusive’ phone callers

by Iain Lundy

OPPONENTS of a giant Tesco in Glasgow's West End have been accused of abusing supermarket employees.

The company has written to protest leaders complaining even junior members of staff had been subjected to "unsavoury language and "aggressive behaviour" over the telephone.

And Tesco said the attitude of the protesters makes it "virtually impossible" for staff to discuss the controversial planned development at Partick.

Organisers of protest group Stop Tesco Owning Partick claim they have not yet been able to identify any culprits but say that such behaviour is "unacceptable".

The allegations were made in an e-mail from Tesco corporate affairs manager Nick Gellatly to campaign leader Dr Samer Bagaeen.

Mr Gellatly wrote: "While we are always happy to engage with those with a genuine interest in our proposals, it has become increasingly difficult for us to do so in Partick. I think it is fair to say that you have conducted yourself with some dignity.

"It is a pity others have not behaved so well and we now find the use of unsavoury language and aggressive behaviour are employed on the telephone to me and junior members of staff.

"This is a clear step change to your opposition and it makes further engagement virtually impossible."

Mr Gellatly said Tesco would continue to discuss the application, for a store, flats and underground car park at the foot of Byres Road, with Glasgow City Council.

When contacted by the Evening Times he said he did not want to make any further comment "because anything I do say is either misinterpreted or escalated into an issue that perhaps it need not be".

Dr Bagaeen said he had no idea who had made the comments but pointed out the letter had come only weeks after Tesco had caused fury by demolishing the old Partick Central station ticket office.

Any engagement Tesco may have had or will have with the local community is unfortunately fictitious...

I personally don't see what the fuss is about. I have been asked to sign the petition against the building of the Tesco store in Partick - but have refused to do so. I am a local resident - but work full time in town. Therefore I already do 99% of my shopping at a supermarket. I literally get the Sunday papers and milk at the local shop at the end of the road. I do not use other local shops, and never have, because their opening hours is not convenient to me. Give people the choice to shop where they want. If you don't want the new Tesco - then don't shop in it once it is built. If you genuinely won't shop in it - then fine, sign the petition. If you want the large piece of derelict land in Partick to remain that way - then sign the petition. If you already drive to a supermarket that's on someone else's doorstep - then support this new development!!

Alan - the "fuss" is about the SIZE of the development and Tesco's plans to change the whole layout of Partick to accomodate the thousands of extra cars that will pour in to an already seriously congested area. It is also about the despicable tactics that Tesco employe in their so-called "dealings" with local communities.

There is absolutley no need for the land in question to remain derelict just because Tesco are not allowed to do all that they want to do.

Partick is one of the few surving areas around Glasgow with a real sense of community, after the Council led vandalism of the 1960's. It's hardly surprising that many local residents want to keep it that way and not have it turned in to Tesco Village.

Large companies such as Tesco spend thousands on projecting how many customers will come to their stores and spend many more thousands on upgrading the road network to cope with the increase - subsequently addressing any previous "Serious Congestion".

What are these "despicable tactics" that Tesco employe in their so-called "dealings" with local communities?

I agree with you - Partick does have a great sense of community - but where is the community going to be if hundreds keeps objecting everytime a new shop or flats are proposed? You need to keep moving forwards.

Sounds more like 'black propoganda' from Tesco, than any real issue.

I hope that the gentleman from Hyndland does not do his shopping in Tesco Metro in Argyle Street - I have heard from staff that it is to close in August/September.....
I oppose Tesco as we all know that it will kill Byres Road's small shops, probably put a question mark over the future of the Somerfield store, and cause traffic problems at Partick Cross. (What right do Tesco have to make streets one way anyway?) And as a Subway User, I can just imagine the overcrowding at Kelvinhall Station when everyone has to go to Tesco to shop... We have Tesco in Maryhill - we don't need another!

subway user you may have tesco in maryhill ,where will you shop for a year when tesco bulldoze the maryhill shoping center to make way for another tesco extra.ps i work for tesco and i say there are too many of them

Alan, most people aren't objecting to the principle of supermarkets, nor Tesco themselves. It's the scale and likely detrimental impact of this SPECIFIC proposal. I'd like more shopping choice locally but not at the myriad costs that this development will likely impose. If you've not looked at the plans, visit the Council's Development & Regeneration Services department at 229 George Street and see for yourself. Look at the building design and the traffic proposals in particular.

Why is a supermarket building student and private accommodation? It seems a bit far removed from fresh fruit and veg. Of course if you are living on site you are bound to shop there. But what about the Morrison's store(Safeway for many years that didn't seem to stifle local competition) that backs onto the site. I can see it closing in future unless there are lots of conscientious objectors using it. So that would an eyesore if it lies empty right at the heart of the commuter hub at Partick Station. A good impression if it's your first foray into the westend. If you walk along Dumbarton Road to Crow Road there are lots of vacant shops, a lot having closed down fairly recently. It's rather depressing. Of course if Tesco is looking to serve its own town folk and those more towards the upwardly mobile Byres Road side then this will only get worse. Partick as we know it will be gone, those who move into Tesco Town will not be Partick People anyway I am sure. Another pocket of culture lost.

Watched the "Dispatches" prog on Ch4? anyway it showed a number of "Dubious" practices Tesco employ such as;

1/ Ignoring planning applications ie; when given permission for lets say 1 Million Sq Feet they build 1.4 Million and then argue with council shall we demolish the new store and what about the XYZ amount of new jobs we have created do you want these people to be made unemployed? Of course local council only deal with 1 or 2 big planning app per year but Tesco does so on a daily basis and can run rings round them.

2/ Only a handful of goods were found to be local to particular store hence making a mockery of Tesco stating they use a lot of local produce

3/ Tesco buy land around their stores and leave it as "Waste ground" to prevent competition

4/Tesco have companies registered in the Camen Islands to avoid paying Stamp Duty on their stores Companies such as Tesco Pink, Tesco Orange etc....

5/ Got a Tesco clubcard? these alow Tesco to have a vast database on any individual does Mr Smith buy dog food - must have a dog is Mrs Smith on the pill? what kind of toothpaste do the Smiths buy?. You make thinks this is all innocent but Tesco have a vast list of subsiduary/ other companies that they trade this valuable marketing information with, all for the sake of paying the customer just 1 Pence in the £1.

Tesco every little hurts !!!

Folks, details of the latest revision of the Tesco proposal (not much different from the one before it) and a revised sample objection letter (for those so inclined) will be available at www.stoptesco.info from tomorrow.

If the planned damage is anything like what Asda did in the Mearns then it should be stopped immediately.

ASDA wiped out hundreds of years of history in building their supermarket at Mearns Cross. It actually wiped out the cross as they built over it.

The cross now looks like one of those strange Tetris pieces. All for the sake of a few quid and we got a plastic shed with no architectural value whatsoever.

With the bad Publicity Tesco got from bulldozing the "Ticket Office / Auction House!" so sneakily,it's little wonder it wants to play dirty tricks, and turn this around to make "S.T.O.P!" look like their the bad ones.

What also came out of Dispatches was Tesco Director Sir Terry Leahy,(recommended for Knighthood by Tony B. Liar) is also to be picked as one of Gordon Brown, (future Prime Ministers,)disciples. What hope do we have then.

Tesco railroad the planning process as it is, with alleged bribes of Councillors to stay quiet with objections.Glasgow City Council are also united with Tesco on this Development.

The Student Accommodation is typical of Tesco's ploys to get the Students on board, and paint a glossy picture to Planners.

But the reality of the situation is more congestion, pollution, noise(from articulated refridgeration units deliveries.)disruption to the whole infrastructure of Partick. And Local shop closures, leading to more charity shops ( exempt from tax.)Estate Agents, or Bookmakers/ Pawnbrokers.

Particks Diversity of shops along its main road will ultimately suffer.I am not prepared to sit back and watch this happen.

By all means raise objections with the Planning Department, but we must also be seen to engage with the local Community and S.T.O.P. this Tesco together, within council guidelines and restraints of the law.

While I do not condone verbal abuse to Tesco employees, I sympathise with the feeling that their voice is not being heard. As such I've started a petition on the downing street website. If you feel strongly on this issue please sign the petition and stop Tesco. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/STOP-TESCO/

Shops don't cause congestion! It's cars and their drivers! Give me a quality supermarket in the West End within 10-15 minutes walking distance and I walk to the shops, especially when roads are congested. Most people in that part of the West End would/should walk to the shops anyway as congestion and parking can be a nightmare.

The nearest quality supermarket just now is Sainbury in Crow Road. Morrisons close at 8pm, which is no good to people who work late. Sommerfield lacks choice and is a rip off with long queues at the checkouts. As to the shops on Dumbarton Road - they cause just as much congestion in that street and shops there don't offer much quality or choice. 2nd hand shops and cafes wont be threatened by Tesco.

Hence, I must concur with Eric, without wanting to sound as harsh on Partick!
Posted by: Daniel, Whiteinch on 1:00pm Wed 4 Apr 07
Gorge, I think Morrisons shuts at 9pm several nights. Sainsburys tends to shut at 10pm and there's also the new M&S on Crow Road.

Add in Somerfield, Iceland and Farmfoods on Byres Road, the 24/7 Asda at Govan, the huge Morrisons at Anniesland and Tesco Maryhill - do we really need a massive Tesco in Partick?

The roads will be logjammed.
