How wonderful to think that that lady is having thousands of pounds wasted on her by the cash strapped NHS for Radiotherapy to treat her throat cancer and her main concern is where to smoke the **** that put her in this position in the first place

Hi,
I am a health worker and smoker in Oz, this law has been introduced here. All you have is a lot of people in uniform standing on the road out the front of the hospital smoking - not a good look.
As a smoker for 40 years, I think I agree with being a health worker and not promoting smoking. Wish the Government of every country that took the millions of profits would not be hypocrytical by taking the money and then saying how bad it it. Put your money where your rules are!!!

I've been watching the outdoor smoking bans at hospitals appear and am waiting for it to hit my hospital. At which point I'll promptly ignore it.
We're talking out in the open air for goodness sake!! The emissions from the deisel engines of the fleet of ambulances that are constantly coming and going represent orders of magnitude more of a health risk than someone having a ****.

Whether or not you are for or against the smoking ban, it does not change the fact that smokers are now being picked on. It's bad enough with the ban already in place in pubs etc. It should have been 50-50, not a total ban. The government is quite happy to take a very large chunk of the price per pack-and then tell you that you can't use the product. The health workers who now have to forfeit their break because they want to have a puff outside the perimeter fence should be able to take their case to the court of human rights. The MSP's who brought this in are only representing part of the population, but they are supposed to represent all of us.But smokers, remember this...there is an election looming-payback time!!

Bullying is wrong no matter the reason. The bully whether in the playground, the hospital or the Parliament will not stop until you hit back. Remember that at the election.
And before you none smokers become too smug just think about who will get bullied next because bully,s cant stop. They just search out their next victim.

Smokers are pathetic selfish and ungrateful and they stink. Society should show them no mercy, its funny when you see them cramped outside pubs stinking the street out- they really need a mirror put up against them to see how hideous they are. We have them on the run a packet of 20 should cost £20.

By all means criticise the smoker. I wonder who will be the first critic of smokers on here to say that they will be more than willingly to pay upwards of £20 per week more in tax. That is how much it will cost YOU in extra taxes to make up for the shortfall if every smoker gave up. Now who is first to say that they will willingly pay this extra???

Staff who smoke and have to go out of the hospital grounds for a cigarette should be timed and have their wages reduced accordingly.Staff who do not smoke don't have the luxury of having all these spells which over a week mount up.

[bold]who is going to enforce this ban in hospital grounds? Certainly not hospital security, who are usually Band 1 or 2 ex porting staff, not a chance, perhaps management would like the job of "policing" the grounds and confronting the psychiatric outpatient, the expectant dad, the nervous day patient, a distraught reletive, the drug user, the drunk visitor, or just the ordinary worker on a meal break.

Why should people have to walk through a cloud of stinking cigarette smoke whilst visiting / working at a hospital of all places? And don't come the "Human Rights" selfish people whom smoke infringe the right's of other peoples health. As for the Government takes the money from duty on cigarettes well the flaw with that argument is more money is spent on treating smoking related illnesses is greatly more than the revenue that is derived in duty from them. Also people smoking affects other peoples health and they in turn being non-smokers don't contribute to this duty!
These are steps which will greatly improve the health of future generations, and i am sure in 5/10 years people will find it hard to imagine anyone was able to smoke in Pubs / Restuarants.
I know from personal experience the company i work for allows staff to go outside and smoke and this is only a skivers charter, many go out for 10 minutes some 6/7 times a day and as a result they do less work and are paid to smoke - and yes in general they are the same people whom have a poorer attendence record!
We as a forward thinking country should welcome such bans - well done NHS Greater Glasgow

My friend is a nurse and for years has worked regular nights in A&E- she smokes. The hospital where she works has banned smoking in the grounds and closed the smoking room. At the weekend A&E is full of drunks etc, staff are attacked and the offenders put out on to the pavement. My friend on her break has to leave the grounds of the hospital and stand on the pavement to smoke a cigarette where she encounters, the drunks and addicts that have been evicted from the hospital for violence. At all times she carrys a personal alarm. What kind of employer puts their staff in this kind of danger in the middle of the night - The Caring NHS dont make me laugh its run by inhumane bullies and health facists that will go to any lengths to enforce their life style on you. How long will it be before another nurse is murdered.

The little trumped up Hitlers put the smokers outside in the first place. No-one owns the air, not even the paranoids. Doctors and Nurses and all who work in the hospitals are not ROBOTS, too many lies have been told, too much money has been wasted, to persecute smokers.
If people do NOT get up and make a voice, then we will have the USA style of intolerance.
It will come over here, your homes, your cars, these fanatics want it all. But the government still want smokers money.
freedom2choose.co.uk is fighting for a judicial reveiw.
Tolerant non-smokers and smokers alike who think this ban is wrong. Please join and show your support.
Hatred is not healthy either!

Hey Craig I have nothing against you, bet you have some great smoking friends, lets try to work and help each other.
Cast your mind back to the days when you were in your Grandfathers house, remember the “smoking” fire and dear old Granddad with his pipe, you would be suiting on the ground and you could see layers of smoke, from grey to blue, and you are still here and ok, and remember they were small sealed rooms, with two lots of smoke, Pipe and fire.
Passive smoking is not a health worry, as they can not name one person, if they could they would shove these names down our throats, they are trying to brainwash and lie to you, please I would not want anyone to do that to me, the real killers are diesel, petrol and toxic factory fumes.
You non-smokers should try and get along with us, as we do not hate you, and I bet you have lots of friends that smoke, we only ask for separate smoking rooms, with ventilation and filtration, and remember non-smoker, the smokers will be outside smoking, who will you have to talk to, and what happens when your local closes, because lots of the smokers stay away, and it will be you next, they want to limit everybody to five pints, then next on the fatter people, we should all stick together, and this is now a dictatorship Government, all we want is freedom of choice.
And I do not want the whole of the rest of my life spoilt, as like a lot her I love to go down my local every now and again for a pint and ****, for Gods sake why not just kill me, if after working all my life I cant have that, I feel so ashamed to be British, men fought and died for our freedom.

What nonsensical ideas are these clueless idiots running our hospitals going to come up with next eh? MRSA? forget that, too dificult, lets bully some smokers, that'll show them we care about health.
The fact is they have no power to enforce this on anyone, it's outside remember.
And what for? The HSE is not interested as passive smoking has never killed anyone, never mind the thousands that the Executive would have you believe.
What is the point of tearing down outdoor smoking shelters other than to bully?
Smoke if you want in this hospital ground, you are not breaking the law. T

Well Laughing Boy....why don't you check the facts for yourself ? Wayne of Wales is correct with his figures.... £8.1 billion is contributed by smokers to the exchequer. Smokers "take out" 2.5 billion from the NHS to treat diseases caused by their smoking, and not by passive smoking. Profit = 5.6 billion. Divide that by the number of people paying tax and you will find that I am right. Now strangely enough I didn't see your name ( or anybody else's ) as one who would be more than willing to pay the extra tax if everyone gave up . Why is that ? Also the number of people smoking in the UK is the lowest it has ever been, yet deaths from lung cancer are the highest they have ever been. Why is that ?
Why is it that the highest number of lung cancer deaths are in towns within 20 miles of the motorway network? Incidentally I DO NOT SMOKE.!!!

What a complete shambles this country is in with fools like these Hospital officials trying to hoodwink the public. Whatever happened to integrity in public office? Of course it all came from the Government in the first place with their get tough on smokers stance. Pity they can't get so tough on preventing MRSA for instance
Time to fight back against these inhumane idiots who see nothing wrong in squandering our money to tell lies, to threaten the sick and elderly patients and then humiliate these folk mentioned in the article. Sack the lot of them and better still, on May 3rd,sack the fools who came up with this in the first place.

I am a non-smoker - I have never actively smoked in my life. My parents were both heavy smokers, so I was a passive smoker from birth.
Two out of my four of my children do not smoke. My ex-husband did.
All I can say is that people have the right to choose. I should be anti-smoking because my mum died of broncho-pneumonia when I was young, as a direct result of smoking from age 11. She started with 10 Woodbine behind the local shop.
Don't tell people what to do - let them decide.
I am a non-smoker - I have never actively smoked in my life. My parents were both heavy smokers, so I was a passive smoker from birth.
Two out of my four of my children do not smoke. My ex-husband did.

Do people realise that nicotine is proven to be 20 times more addictive than 'heroin' and heroin addicts get major help but smokers don't?
Admittedly there are patches, lozenges, groups, helplines, but not to the same degree that methadone users and clinics have at their disposal for other addicts.
Why do smokers have to pay twice? Once for their addiction and second to stop?

I find some of the posts on here quite saddening, has society changed so much that they would deny people treatment because they smoke, Elizabeth Pye and James Fyvie should have a bit of education and realize that most cancers are not proven smoking related, should they get cancer in the future, some one may just turn around and say you ate the wrong food so we are withholding any medical treatment I would not wish that on anybody no matter how they have led their life. People have different lives, people need different things and what right have these people to Judge other people, very sad.

This country is suffering from a bureaucrat infestation and the sooner that rentokil is called in the better for all of us. These disgusting non-contributers make me vomit. In 2005 the labour government in Westminster appointed another 25,000 of these cretins to rule over us from their non-elected positions of power. 25000 is more people than work in the whole of the Brussels monolith. On each occasion that more money is pumped into the health service the vast army of non-producing bureaucrats increases whilst the number of doctors and nurses remains as before. To justify their existence they produce yet more restrictions on the lives of anyone unfortunate enough to come into contact with the health service. The only answer is to show the door to Joke McConnel and the rest of the completely inept MSPs residing in the Scottish parliament, living it up at our bloody expense and contributing absolutely nothing that advances the lives of Scottish citizens. Once Labour's Scottish vote dries up Brown will soon have his attention focused, on the exit door!

If governments were truly committed to helping people to stop smoking they would introduce legislation to prohibit tobacco companies putting into their product the cocktail of carcinogenic chemicals that actually cause the addiction. As a previous poster highlighted the net gain to the government is in the region of £5billion a year. So, rules are introduced, safe in the knowledge that a hardcore cannot or will not stop smoking and so guarantee Broon a nice little earner, thanks very much. The tyrants in the NHS also continue safe in the knowledge that while Labour are in power their little kingdoms are safe.

get a grip all you zealots who would have smokers hung from the gallows. This debate has gone on for years and you have to ask where do you draw a line. Do any of you have a mum dad aunt sister etc who is overweight? why should she or he get their hip or knee replacement as a direct result of overeating just the same argument you would have for a smoker. Yes smoking is stupid but so is filling your face with too much food or drinking yourself to oblivion everynight or just sitting in front of the tv night after night working yourself up to the big heart attack GROW UP

What price is life?
Smoking bans kill people. There have been at least 2 actual (not statistical) deaths here in the last little while. These were a direct result of smoking bans. There are also the assaults, both physical & sexual,to be considered. There is also the increase in robberies due to tobacco tax increases. The black market & booze cans are thriving.Despite what the "good fairy" tells you, there is a huge economic cost. The proponents of these useless smoking bans should be held accountable for their actions. All this just because a comparitively few people do not like the smell.
This assault on the smokers' life, limb,
employment, medical access, housing, child custody and other rights has gone more than far enough. It should have never been started in the first place.
Remember the words of Sir Richard Doll, the man credited with proving the causal link between active smoking and lung cancer."The effect of other people smoking in my presence is so small it doesn't worry me."(2001)

Sad, is'nt it, MRSA, poverty, dysfunctional society being built on the division and intolerance devised by those who have spent many years on creating a situation of division among folk. Oh! yes there are the numpties, 'laughing boy' a good eg, My suggestion to this guy, is find a hobby, play your game, whatever your self indulgent fantasies may be, but in the meantime, 'grow up' there are so many angry folk who feel that you will find it hard to raise a smile in good company, let alone laugh at anyone, silly boy. A 10 watt bulb. Perhaps, Kerr and his gang might regenerate their thinking on how to get the folk re-united again, after this unholy mess they designed. McConnell only needs mentioning in so far as, "His Legacy" should be something that is airbrushed out of Scottish History, and Kerr your "legacy" carries on, every time you open your mouth, perhaps, you may be our'laughing boy'. Believe me Mr Kerr, you do not hear, you do not listen to people and your shelf life is limited, Is there any re-hab centres for failed politicians in your SE planning? I would ask? There are too many nutty 'Laughing Boys' kicking about, who get their 'Rocks off' in destroying peoples lives and their social inclusion.

Never mind smoking rooms. I think all you smokers should be deported to Anthrax Island where you can pollute the air and smoke yourselves to death without inflicting the toxic fumes and nasty smells on the rest of us.
My father used to tell me smoking frazzles the brain. Reading the idiotic and illogical comments from smokers in this thread, I am convinced my father was right.
And another thing. I am sick of watching TV documentaries about disasters the world over where lots of people were killed in fires in tunnels, cinemas, trains, ships, football stadiums etc, all because a dumb smoker carelessly discarded a cigarette. How many more innocents will die as a result of the selfish actions of these morons who can't function without a cigarette hanging from between their withering lips?

Smoking has been known to be a killer for 40 years +. It kills most of the smokers and harms those around them. Smokers have gone into this self destruction mode voluntarily. Get a grip people, your smoking habits are harmful to you and me, and you and your surroundings smell. Those smells should be eliminated from Hosital Grounds and all public places. The more smoking bans we have, the better

I put up a challenge in a post above at 4.54 p.m., to see if all the anti-smokers on here would tell me that they would willingly pay upwards of £20 per week more in taxes if everyone in the UK stopped smoking. Not one has said they would!!! Now what does that say ???
Incidentally, should all the smokers give up, it might be worthwhile to remind the anti-smokers that it will not only be your taxes which go up, your pension could be affected. Why is this? Some local councils have shares in British-American tobacco, as does the government. So to all the "anti-smoking" brigade, why don't you be like me, and thank the smokers for saving YOU money both now and in the future? In return all you have to do is put up with a little bit of a bad smell ( their smoking will NOT kill you)and you save a fortune!! Not a bad deal is it? Now you could really do a bit of good by lobbying to eliminate something which has proven to be a killer, and that is exhaust fumes which contain at least 4 carcinogens.

The results of the poll clearly show the scant regard many of those in Glasgow & the West of Scotland have for their health & well being.
If less were in hospital due to smoking related illnesses then surely that money could be channelled to worthwhile uses.

Alan (Glasgow) - you seem to be forgetting that most of the price of a pack of cigarettes goes in tax to the Treasury already so smokers already pay more in tax.

Marginalising and ostracising people by law is hardly forward thinking, Craig. In addition to RTS's point above, smokers are turning to cut-price bans and the tobacco lobby is lobbying the government to freeze taxes on tobacco so as not to encourage smokers on to the black market. Smokers are in other words trying to get more tobacco for their money, and the net result will be that the Treasury gets less revenue per ounce of tobacco smoked. In a word the government message is that smokers are a drain on society. That kind of message is the last thing any society, or any section in society needs.
Unlike George from South Lanarkshire I am encouraged that the poll reflects a desire not to make life harder for hard-pressed medical staff, patients and visitors by ejecting them from the premises to smoke. What happened to mutual respect? Tearing down smoking shelters – themselves a poor apology for giving people a warm and comfortable area to sit in – is the most petty official vandalism I heard of in a long time.

Still nobody has come forward to say that they are willing to pay upwards of £20 per week in taxes to finance any shortfall if everybody gave up smoking.
We can "draw" our own conclusions about this...
It kills most of the smokers and harms those around them.
The affect of smoking on the smoker clearly depends on the amount & the individual concerned.I mean you can't generalise like this, as many smokers might say only indulge a few ciggies a day & then there's the pipe smokers or the occasional cigar smoker.
It's a bit like saying that all drinkers are destroying their liver by consuming any alchohol, so we'd better ban drinking.Maybe that's the next one on the agenda?
As far as harming those around them ,there is no proof that there is any danger in SHS.

Selfish, what I consider selfish is elderly people being put out on the street if they wish to smoke. Stand up in a pub and give an elderly person your seat, but if they smoke sling them out onto the street, now thats what I call selfish and inhumane. How about all those people that drive their cars spewing out toxic fumes why dont they do that in their own environment not mine. Have you considered where the exhaust on a car is, usually pointing towards the pavement and just at the same height as a child in a pushchair, now thats what I call inconsiderate forcing babies to breathe in your toxic car fumes. Talk about the kettle calling the pot. People should put their own house in order before they critise others.

Well Donnie did i say i had a car? I think to support your argument you are making up fictitious circumstances, and in fact it is these same elderly people whom cause harm to others as i have just stated, maybe the same ones that moan about the cost of this and that oh 5 pence on a bag of sugar etc etc ..but don't mind paying £4 for a packet of cigarettes.

Sharon Buist:
I dont believe the figure of £1.5 billion either. I think it is much, much lower. I just learnt today that China, with her 350 million smokers, spend only £2.5 billion on treatment.
Illness, treatment, and everything else about smoking is a big fat lie.
If keeping the hoax going brings you some sort of smug pleasure. Keep doing it.

I wish 2 acknowledge the pro choice comments. The personal, general attacks, I will not dignify with a reply. To the voices of ignorance; with the audacity to decide on the 'non-deserving' for health care, based on their primitive judgementalism and need to 'demonise' people, I say hang your heads in shame. To Mr James Fyvie, I offer my apologies on their behalf. I am sure you were of the belief that you were living in and worked all your adult life in a tolerent, compassionate, respectful and fair Scotland. I hope the politicians pay the price for ignoring the majority. To Mr Fyvie - my utmost respect and wish you strength to face health adversity.

I wonder how many of the posters above were of the persuasion that when the smoking ban in public came in last year that 80% of pubs would close? Going into Glasgow city centre you will find that pubs like the Counting House are have people outside 2 deep to get in strange eh? And time has proven that pub groups like JD Wetherspoon are actually experiencing a growth in non wet sales eg; food
and are opening more pubs which just proves how people made judgements based on their own biased mis-information.
