Scots marine among 15 captured by Iran

A YOUNG Scot is among the 15 British sailors seized by Iran, it was revealed today.

Reports named the captured marine as Danny Masterton, 26, from Muirkirk in Ayrshire.

His father, ex-Clyde and Ayr United footballer Danny Snr, 52, said: "We just want Danny home."

The serviceman's sister, Sarah, said: "It is a very hard time for all of us - my mum is in hospital, which makes things worse."

Negotiations for consular access to the captured sailors were continuing today after the screening of Iranian TV footage of them was condemned as "completely unacceptable".

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said she was "very concerned" they may have faced "pressure or coercion" at the hands of the Iranians.

Diplomats were alarmed by footage of Leading Seaman Faye Turney - the one woman in the crew - in which she admitted they had "trespassed" into Iranian waters.

The 15, from the frigate HMS Cornwall, were seized last Friday after boarding an Indian cargo ship for a routine search. Britain insists they were in Iraqi waters.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said the hostages would only be released if Britain admitted they had been in Iranian waters.

But he said Iran had agreed to Britain's demands for consular access to the 15.

Iranian TV showed them eating a meal. All appeared fit and well, with no signs of ill treatment.

It also showed a letter from Leading Seaman Turney - a mum of one - to her family, in which she said she had written to the Iranian people apologising for what the crew had done.

The Foreign Office raised "grave concerns" about the circumstances under which she was interviewed.

Leading Seaman Turney, wearing a black headscarf, was the only crew member shown speaking.

Looking tired and tense and smoking a cigarette, she said: "Obviously we trespassed into their waters. They were very friendly and very hospitable, very thoughtful, good people."
