AN INTERNET drama about a Glasgow superhero is set to be broadcast across Europe.

After years of trying to break into television, writer and filmmaker Fraser Coull is to have his own sci-fi TV series broadcast on digital satellite.

And it's thanks to the massive success of his internet website.

Fraser, 23, is the mastermind behind Night Is Day: The Web Series, a six-part sci-fi series.

It follows the adventures of Jason Mackenzie, Glasgow's first superhero, as he deals with learning to use his powers, tackling the evil crimelord Mr Philips, and his growing feelings for young writer Amy.

Night Is Day was developed on a budget of nothing but goodwill, with film editors, special effects crews and actors giving their time.

Top Scots actor Martin Compston agreed to film part of the series for free.

Now the website series has been picked up by Propeller TV, the first digital satellite TV channel in Europe.

"It's fantastic news," said Fraser, who grew up in Langbank and studied TV and film production at James Watt College.

"The Night Is Day website picked up an incredible 14,000 hits since its recent release.

"The series has it all - good storylines, professional direction standards, great acting and a fantastic Glasgow backdrop."

Chris Somerville stars as superhero Jason, with Shian Denoven as the love interest, Amy.

The series is filmed on location in Glasgow and Fraser has been calling in favours for filming access.

"I've been given great access to lots of Glasgow landmarks, and places such as the Lighthouse have been terrific in allowing us to film," he said.

"But what's really great about the series is that it will hopefully become a launch pad for everyone involved, the young team of independent filmmakers who have been battering at the doors of the BBC, or wherever, but haven't been given a chance.

"Night Is Day is the perfect way to show people what we can do."

The series, co-produced by Kim Ferrie, has been attracting attention in the city.

"It's been a great experience filming scenes with demons running riot in Buchanan Street at 7am. You should have seen the faces on people going to work," said Fraser.

•Night Is Day is on Saturday at 10pm on Propeller TV - Channel 195 on Sky - or see it at www.nightisday. com
