Drink driver ‘5 times the limit’

A CHEF who was more than five times times the drink-drive limit on his way to work has been jailed for three months.

A court heard it was Andrew Hulley's third conviction for driving under the influence of drink.

Paisley Sheriff Desmond Leslie said it was the highest drink-driving reading he had ever seen.

He added: "People have died with a lower reading than that."

Hulley, of Fulbar Street, Renfrew, pleaded guilty to driving with 187 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath in Glebe Street, Renfrew, on March 25. The legal limit is 35.

He also admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Hulley, 46, was so drunk he had difficulty stopping his car when pulled over by police. When arrested, he could hardly stand.

Sentence was deferred for a social inquiry report and community service assessment, and when Hully was hauled back to court to learn his fate, Sheriff Neil Douglas heard he had only taken the car to get to his work as the driver he normally used had let him down.

But a court background profile revealed the offence was the accused's third drink-driving related conviction. Defence agent Gordon Ritchie said his client had made a huge error of judgment in deciding to drive himself to work.

Commenting on that, Sheriff Douglas asked: "He was going to work when he could hardly stand?"

Jailing Hulley, the sheriff said: "This is your third drink driving-related matter and as it is a very high reading, you will go to prison for three months."

He disqualified him for six years.
