A WEST END protest group used a mass massage to get their message across.

All Tomorrow's Particks are furious at plans to build a giant Tesco on waste land at Beith Street.

So the group organised the world's largest group massage - making their protest an attempt at a Guiness World Record at the same time.

The complex, dubbed Tesco Town', would include a 24-hour megastore, 541 parking spaces and 925 student flats - taking up 9950 sq meters of green space.

The protest group hope to force Glasgow City Council to reject the supermarket giant's planning application.

Founding member of All Tomorrow's Particks, Robert Walton, a lecturer, said: "We know we will be successful as other towns have had successes and we're very determined.

"It would be nice if the council took more action or asked Partick people what they want, but that hasn't happened.

"And it would be good to see someone from Tesco come to one of our meetings and speak to us."

Students Rachel Woodward, 23, and Todd Whiteford, 22, were at the record attempt to lend a hand.

Rachel said: "To be honest, we didn't know this was on and just saw the signs as we were passing.

"But once we stopped and asked some questions we realised how important it is. There are loads of little local shops here that would be put out of business by a Tesco."

Shaun,
It's this kind of disengaged attitude you display that's made this country the not-so-nice kinda place it is right now

tesco has brought pleasure to the masses with its massive shops, and helped eradicate all the unhygeinic grotto little corner shops

Shaun - not everyone who lives in Partick is a student nor do they go on about living in the west end. Some of us don't want to see the traffic get any worse along Dumbarton Rd or the surrounding streets, which is bound to happen when they build a huge tesco just off the junction of Byres Rd and Dumbarton Rd. I don't know whereabouts you live but if everyone has your attitiude nothing would ever change.

Alright there may be 3 people in the West End who do not introduce themselves as coming from there or are not students. But because these are likely to be housebound the rest of us bever get to hear from them.

Well done the Labour Council in ignoring these idiots.I just wonder what the ET agenda is in giving them newsprint on this issue.

Once again, and rather sadly, the Evening Times reporters are backing their pals' personal agendas, which the vast majority either disagree with or don't care about. Extortionately over-paid journalists in their ivory towers may turn their noses up at cheap groceries or drink (apart from the freebies they demand themselves) but for the working class west-enders, this new store will be heaven-sent!!

Dear me, 'Rant' (read 'runt agenda') and John (read 'I work for Tescos') really don't get it do they? People are getting out and making a difference in our area - they are trying to help the community to come together.

Perhaps John and Rant should leave their keyboards occassionally and see what they can do for Partick BEFORE Tesco comes to run every part of their lives - from cradle to funeral (yes Tesco will even sell you that!)

There is enough choice in the Partick area with the selection of supermarkets and local shops that all ready exist. The people who want a Tesco are the lazy people who want to drive everywhere. You will be wanting to drive into the store next and up the aisles so you can buy your cheap nasty food items. If you actually live in the area and speak to other people then you will see that the Tesco is'nt wanted. Get your fat belly out your car and go and walk about Partick and ask peoples opinion!

If everyone is against it in Partick why the worry, no one will shop in it. The Labour Council has worked hard to get inward investment in such areas and this is what they face from a few lentil pickers. As I stated before well done them for standing up to the likes of you lot!!

The council has not stood up to anyone, in fact the local LABOUR councillor and LABOUR MSP are against the Tesco being built, as are the Conservatives, Socialists, SNP, Lib Dems and Greens. Not much support politically then! Tesco will provide no long term investment - all their profits are fished out oversees for new stores and paid to shareholders. The Tesco will destroy the community and take away local jobs.

If people bothered to actually do some reseach they would understand how bad this will be for the local area. Well done to Stop Tesco and All Tomorrow's Particks for trying to engage with the local community, and for offering them an alternative.

Rant, you seem to know nothing about the economic effect that this monstrous plan would have on the people of Partick. Please think a bit or at least try to see beyond your own personal 'everything for me on my doorstep right now' existence.
I live in the west end-I am not a student and am working class. I am also not stupid enough to think that turning Glasgow into an exact copy of every other town in the British Isles by filling it with the same multi-nationals is a good thing for his place and all that live here.
Get off your bum and look outside-Partick is a great place-let's not throw it away by allowing Tesco to take over Scotland-powered by our hard-earned cash!

What would really make a difference is attracting a Waitrose instead of a mega Tesco's of which there are 3 within 10mins drive. (Milngavie, Pollok and Springburn).

A bit more quality choice is what the areas needs as there are plenty of cheap choices available already without Tesco tossing their hat into the ring.

West end mum, I appreciate the fact that you understand there is no necessity for a Tesco supermarket, however I feel there no necessity for ANY supermarket!

Plus, coming from Partick, I'm not sure the people of this area want a waitrose. I don't think demographically, it's really Partick's Style!

What we should be focusing on is alternatives, not alternative supermakets-REAL alternatives.

Something for the community, perhaps an attraction that will bring money and people into the area.
Only this can be called a true regenaration.

Having Lived In Partick For 34 Years I Totally agree with the Regeneration of the area and The Bringing together of the Sometimes Lost Community Spirit, But who are the local shops that are going to go out of Business? Morrisons,Sainsburys,Somerfields and Marks and Spencer as They seem to be the only ones thriving in the partick area. The local specialist shops will always have custom as they sell a lot of hard to find Items and offer a very good customer service. And where are these Jobs going to be lost?, Im sure Tesco will require a lot of staff which will suit a lot of People who need to work part time. Partick is and always will be a working Class area, No matter how much the house prices escalate. The vast majority of people in the area require a choice of cheaper products within walking distance as not everyone has access to Cars or Public transport. Wake up!! Partick isnt Bearsden its a normal area that just happens to be located in the West End with pensioners, students and working class familys who would appreciate a Voice now and again!!.

I have found the pro Tesco comments quite disgusting and threatening, and indeed I have only commented on the ET site in support of someone I believed sincere and being set upon. Tesco only exists to make Tesco shareholders money - anyone else who isn't a share holder and supportive of them is a fool. I wouldn't support them if I wasn't making anything out of them.

If you want choice in shopping please ask your local shop/supermarket to supply what you want - if they have any business sense they will do so. If you have problems with parking it is only the council who is obliged to fulfil this demand. If you are disabled the recent law changes mean all premises should give you equal access - complain if this is not the case. Tesco is not a social service provider nor is it Santa Clause so get a grip - if things don't work out in Partick with the 'locals' (regardless of 'class' - how disgusting to comment on this in this day and age) they will only attract those away from their normal Tesco stores to Partick and really cause congestion by not selling in other stores what they know people are willing to travel to get - special offers in alcohol here they come - that's classless.

Tesco is making fools out of you all, pro and anti. I hope anyone with Tesco shares and an ounce of human decency sells their shares swiftly, if those commenting here are their supporters I hope they want no further dealings with such a company - one that can split a community with such high feeling is completely dishonourable. I can not see how Tesco can offer coupons to support community activities with such goings on at present.

Disgusted ex share holder.

Having lived in Partick for nearly 30years, I have seen a lot of changes, and not all of them to the good of the area. Byres Road is compiled of mostly Coffee Bar's , Bistro's,
Pubs who seem to take up half the pavement with their tables and chairs, Building Societies, Banks, and surprise, surprise, some small local traders squeezed in between,
Dumbarton Road is almost as bad.
As for the student body, there does happen to be a University in the area, so they do need the accommodation. Then maybe those students that are living in sublet flats possibly in your close and mine would move out and give us
our peace of mind back. Before anyone rants, I am not tarring you all with the same brush, but I have had first hand experience of a could'nt care less atitude from some of them.
As for congestion, don't make me laugh.
Dumbarton Road has always been a very busy road, maybe the fact that to many people have cars, some more than one is causing the
congestion problems on all our roads, not only Dumbarton Road. Maybe the fact the rates are too high for this area, has something to do no small traders moving in.
