Simon’s got the bear essentials

by Jonathan Rennie

THERE are plenty of people 'bear'-ing to go for this year's Men's Health Forum Scotland 10K for Men.

Staff at Buchanan Galleries have got right behind this year's event at Bellahouston Park on June 17 - and Simon Cooke assistant Manager at toy shop Build-a-Bear is leading Team BG; a group who all work in the centre.

Like many of his colleagues this is his first 10K and he can't wait.

He said: "It's a great event to get involved with as it raises awareness of important issues for men and is also a great incentive to keep fit.

"I'm looking forward to the atmosphere on the day, and am hoping that lots of staff from Buchanan Galleries will get involved and help us to raise a lot of money for charity."

The shopping centre is supporting the event, organised by Men's Health Forum Scotland, and is encouraging centre staff to step up to the 10K challenge.

It is also hosting a special 10K Day' for men interested in taking part.

On Sunday representatives from Men's Health Forum Scotland will be outside John Lewis to provide information on the event and its associated charity, Cancerbackup Scotland, as well as providing tips and advice.

They will also be offering training tips and details of jogging groups across Scotland.

There are groups across Glasgow and the central belt and lots of people have been getting involved. One of the largest groups, the East End Pavement Pounders, takes more than 40 people out for weekly runs in preparation of the Men's Health Forum Scotland 10K for Men.

And the Richmond Fellowship in Hamilton has been running the Hamilton Connect Cruisers jogging group with people of all ages and abilities in the area.

Group leader David McFarlane said: "We have had a great response so far and people are really enjoying themselves. Our group meets up on Mondays and Fridays and as well as helping people get fit it has been good socially too."

Last year more than 1500 people took part in the Men's Health Forum Scotland 10K for Men.

This year, with the Evening Times as media partner, we're expecting even more people to be at the starting line on Father's Day.

This is for every man - big, small, young, old, for someone who plays five-a-sides every week or someone who hasn't run in five years.

As well as tips from trainers at Buchanan Galleries, there is an online training programme at www.mhfs.org.uk and there are jogging groups across the city where you will meet other people taking part, all with different degrees of fitness.

Everyone who crosses the finishing line on June 17 will receive a medal, goody bag and T-shirt.

But to get involved you will need to be fast off the mark. You have to register by Friday June 1. To register or to find out more call 0141 550 7515 or visit www.mhfs.org.uk
