Yeah just what we need !! Another hotel for souless tourists who turn the city into a richmans playground. I am sure owners of the massage parlours will be delighted by this development.....

Got it in one Charlie. Seems like most folk on here would be quite happy to see Glasgow frozen in time. I agree this is excellent news. More jobs, more tourists, more money, AND more businessmen - just possibly thinking about investing their business here, Meep?
Glasgow has come a long way in recent years, and is still ploughing ahead! Well done Glasgow!

It's about time we got some good-quality 5 star hotels in Glasgow. Only then, can we start to rival Edinburgh and London in the business stakes.

Who is the tourism good for exactly. The benefits of this tourism hasnt filtered down to the whole of Glasgow. In terms of poverty levles Glasgow is still there and the tourist developments have not made any diffrence to reducing the poverty levels in Glasgow. So this argument that hotels will help Glasgow are false and dishonest.

Meep & Franco-Germand - given that you are down on building a hotel that creates jobs and also down on tourists coming to the city, what exactly would be your ideas for improving Glasgow? Or are you simply the type of people who stand on the side lines and criticise but have no coherent plans yourselves?

Before you all slag off Meep, does Glasgow really need to create more minimum wage jobs (forget about managers etc, i'm, talking about porters, cleaners.)
Our benefit scroungers won't get off their butts to work in a hotel for the minimum wage. So looks like this hotel is going to benefit more Eastern Europeans and that is it.
The Holiday Inn is a good example. Half of the maids and porters struggle with English.

This is great news for Glasgow and our tourist and business trade. Every great city in the world has poverty areas so it's no reason to be so negative about this hotel proposal.

Yes, let's not build the hotel because some of the staff will more likely than not be immigrants. Christ, some people will complain about ANYTHING. No doubt you are against Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games, 'Rab', because some Polish people might get jobs associated with it.

"GLASGOW'S International Financial Services District, dubbed Wall Street on the Clyde, has transformed a derelict part of the city"
Dubbed by who - I've never anyone call it; no doubt our revered city council who quite successfully ignore the ongoing problem of hookers. Will they making plans to move the ladies along or will the tourists be treated better than local workers who have to put up with it?

I will just go back to my earlier point. Who benefits from the tourism in Glasgow? Not Glaswegians. Most of the tourists who come here are here merely for a couple of days max (a'la dirty weekend). And most of them will stay in the city centre. Will we see tourist contibuitng money to the south side? In one word no. Like a previous poster siad most the jobs in these hotels are minimum wage and ususally go to foreigners who will work in poor conditions. So this idea that hotels will be the answer for Glasgow are nonsense. The main focus for Glasgow should be developing a metropolitan subway system and the transport links. Not building more hotels. Thank Glasgow hasnt turned into Edinburgh....

Last week I contributed to a debate on here about the disgraceful prices and quality of the new flats built on the site of the old Meadowside granary, a project that seems rife with back scratching, horsetrading, gerrymandering and corruption, not to mention the fact that most indigenous Glaswegians could not hope to afford one of these flats. That is a REAL disgrace.
The fact that a private investor wants to plough money into an area of the town that is horrible and run down, create jobs and raise the likelihood of further investment in the city can only be good. I cannot fathom the logic that it is unwelcome or a bad thing.
Surely new jobs cannot be bad? Even if they are what is considered at the lower end of the pay scale, surely a person's dignity would dictate that it is better to work a 40 hour week for more than the dole? Should we not give the dignified unemployed who may have fallen victim to the collapse of traditional industry in Glasgow the opportunity to work? Who are we to tell people to work or not?
Create the opportunities. No one will force people to take them.
I cannot fathom the negativity on here about this at all.

Meep - your argument would be a lot more persuasive if you provided some evidence to back up your statements regarding the minimum wage. What proportion of jobs in Glasgow hotels are paid at the minimum wage? What proportion of workers in hotels are non-UK citizens?
You may also be right about priorities but lets remember that the hotel is being built by a private company not the Council or Executive.
Tourist may or may not go much to the Southside - although I'd have thought that Hampden's recent UEFA cup final and places like the Burrell and the Mackintosh Art House in Bellahouston would attract visitors and therefore some spending in local businesses. You also seem to forget that people living in the Southside may work in areas outwith the Southside where tourists visit.
I'm still interested to hear how you would create jobs in Glasgow.

Places llike the Burrell collection use to be free, and are now run by yanks and is extortionate to go into. As for the UEFA cup final, the only places that benefited that event were the burger vans who were charging for their usual £2.20 burgers. It was a little embarrassing. As for your omment towards Meep "I'm still interested to hear how you would create jobs in Glasgow," What do you think MIke? Instead of asking questions, why don't you put your awe in and then see who agrees.

There's your answer Mike. Get yourself a burger van, you'll be quids in!
So during their entire stay Rab, these people had no need to sleep, eat, drink etc... They appear to be some alien race that can survive for 48-72 hours without sustainance or sleep. By the way, I'm half Spanish and I don't recognise there traits in my relatives, so I dunno about that. I might be wrong, but I don't think so.
Unbelievable!.......

rab.. entrance to the burrell collection is free and it is not owned by yanks as you put it,,even if the council where to sell it off i dont think there would be many people who could afford such a priceless collection.i think you have been getting your info from the same people who belive elvis is still alive.your glass seems to be premanatley half empty rab..every spanish fan i saw in george square was carrying a greggs bag and various other shopping bags from glasgow,,even if each of them spent £2 in glasgow that would be almost £40,000 in revenue,,i wish i owned the shop that sold them the tartan bunnets, i could have retired,,stop being so negative and try and come up with something better or more accurate please..

Well done GLASGOW! We need much more of this kind of development - clearing away derelict sites, attracting wealthy tourists who spend in our city and recommend it to others, thus driving the upturn in visitors, jobs and prosperity.
For the rest of you negative people, get a life or go live in a City that's not charging forward. Go Glasgow!

swegians? Perhaps the locals could apply for jobs in the construction and running of the hotel, or the many local companies who will be involved in supplying food, drink, linen and much more to the hotel. Tourist attractions in Glasgow will benefit from the increase in tourists, Meep? How about cinemas, bars, restaurants, theatres and shops. The visitors to the hotel will not me cooped up inside for the duration of their stay.
With regard to your comment about tourists contributing money to the south-side, I am sure they do, as many come to explore Shawlands, Queens Park and beyond, where there are also many hotels (albeit not as extravagant as the proposed Argyle site). Perhaps if you'd like to see more tourists within the South-side, you should embark on a promotion of the highlights of the area, in order to attract interest. This posting is about a city-centre hotel. A hotel which will be good for Glasgow, and all who live here.

Meep - you are a muppet and a racist by the sound of things.
If there wasn't a market for a hotel, it wouldn't be built, new jobs benefit everyone.
Having had a falling population for decades, we should be happy that migrants are coming to Scotland to steady the ship

When all is said and done the only folk wo should be worried/botherd about this hotel are the folk at the raddisson which is directly opposite (beside) the proposed site...and if it helps encouraging more multi national buisnesses to come fill the void office space in the surronding area then aint that a good thing..and in my experience multi-nationals tend NOT to pay the minimum wage

You leaving home is contributing to our falling population, which doesn't make me happy that migrants come here when we've got plenty of people sitting in their homes, smoking dope, picking up benefits, selling drugs and getting silly wee lassies pregnant, when reallyy should be out there working. I also moved from Glasgow because of the complete lack of opportunity, something that this very initiative may take great strides towards addressing. If someone had bothered investing in the city to this degree 12 years ago, I might well not have ever had to leave.
Irony or what?
I hate the way that only the most small minded of Glaswegians trot out this line as if it makes you a traitor to your birthplace. The place where you were born is a complete accident of birth. If you were born in the dunghole that is Wolverhampton does that mean that you are duty bound to remain there for the rest of your life, thereby forsaking all other opportunities?
What a moron!

I am proud to have come from a city that has such a rich cultural tapestry due to economic migrants.
The Italians, Chinese, Bengalis, Pakistanis, Punjabis and even lesser migrant groups like the Eastern/central European Jewish, Poles etc are an absolute asset to the city.
You continually hear of stories of people arriving from The Pubnjab in the 60's with about a fiver and owning their own businesses (not stealing oor joabs!) a decade or so later. How can people with this work ethic be anything other than welcome?
Economic migrants give a city's re-generation a bit of momentum ever quarter of a century or so.

You wouldn't be back like a shot at all
David, and if you think Wolverhampton is a dump, don't come back here, because i think you'll be disappointed. I think you need to get laid.
As for you mackenzie, why are you mentioning the Punjab community this and the Italian community that.
I thought this was supposed to be ONE Scotland, so why are you segregating. What next? The catholic community? The lesbian community? The benefit comminuity? The "I'm half Spanish" community. The heroin using community.

Thanks Charles and Kevin.
I have actively briefed headhunters in the past to get me a similar job back home. I have specifically indicated that I am willing to take a significant pay cut to return home as long as I can retain a similar quality of life.
The only trouble in the past has been that the general get up and go amongst recruitment people in Glasgow has not been great and I end up touching base with them every 6 months or so to be told "er, not a lot going on mate" If Glasgow pulls itself up by its bootstraps, maybe this situation will change. There's nothing wrong with the people we produce. Half of my industry seems to be Scottish.
If anyone knows a decent recruitment consultant, please let me know.
Best of luck Kevin. Hope to be joining you in the near future.

Rab, I've recently moved from Inverness to Glasgow due to the upturn in opportunities here. I also chose Glasgow over Edinburgh because of the buzz of the city and its people. Its a shame you are such a demotivator. Time to get that chip off your shoulder mate!

Rab, you try to be controversial. I'm sure you find it funny to wind folk up a bit - me too. However, I think everyone is getting fed up with your constant whingeing and put-downs. Is it not the case perhaps, that it is you who is unhappy in your job, you who is unhappy where you live, and you who is unhappy with your quality of life? If so, practise what you preach, and get a better job, and a life!!

Is it not the case perhaps, that it is you who is unhappy in your job, you who is unhappy where you live, and you who is unhappy with your quality of life? If so, practise what you preach, and get a better job, and a life!![/quote] Got a good job (could be better paid at 22k).
Got a decent three bedroomed in Newton Mearns.
It just, when you work in the city, you can see certain places reeking with scum. (zombiefied people who look likethey need a wash).
If you don't like my comments, don't respond. If you want to accept medocrity for your city, fine. I won't. Thats why I always complain, thats why i 've shopped 3 benefit fraudsters in the last 3 weeks.
