What an excellent idea. These posters make a complete mess of walls, windows and utility boxes. Whoever came up with the 'cancelled' idea, deserves a pat on the back.

There would be a much easier way to solve this.
For every flyposter put up where it shouldn't be, advertising an event, charge the promoters behind said event for the clean-up costs. After all, if a wall's covered in, say, "Rock Ness" posters, surely its fairly easy to determine who to fine - the organizers of said event.

An easier solution would be to look at the CCTV footage of these individuals who put up these fly posters, get their address and decorate their front window with the very same posters?
Or get them to scrape the posters off with a cup of cold water and a kitchen knife?

Yeah, about time these big promoters got a taste of their own medicine!
There is no excuse for fly-posting and the "cancelled" stickers are quite a humourous way of getting back at the promoters.
Why do they have to advertise to the excess? I'm sure many events have already been advertised in the media etc. Same as the political posters that were plastered all over Glasgow to the excess as well. Maybe they hope we will be subconsciously taken in by it all?
Has anybody seen the two big metal pillars in Charing Cross covered from top to toe in posters. I take it these are to allow persons to legally post without defacing our beautiful city? If this is the case, well done to the organisers.
Clean Glasgow.

You can use the internet to look up gigs. The very same internet you used to post this comment.
Great name, I've got a mate called Mike Hocksaw. Honest.

Delighted to hear some positive comment on this, we weren't sure what the public response would be, and it's been frustrating reading a lot of ill informed misinformation in these commentaries on Clean Glasgow(you know who you are).
We are also expanding legal flyposting sites e.g. the drums at byres road and elsewhere, and we have good support from the major Glasgow promoters. We will keep on doing this to support events. Yes we need to work harder with the out of towners e.g. Rock Ness.
Rab, love some of your ideas, pity we can't action most of them.
Keep it clean folks!

Why don't we have a chain gang system, where a dozen prisoners chained up and highly guarded are made to tidy up the city on mornings.
Lazy prisoners may refuse, but some would like the change of scenery and fresh air. At least then, they AND the public wins. I'm sure it'll save GCC some money as well.
Any prisoner that misbehaves is banned for life for the next clean up operation. No?

Good idea. I'd definitely hit the company who is doing the advertising with a fine. It's about time the authorities got tough with people causing a mess in our towns and cities. Maybe they don't object to living in a pigsty but the rest of us do.
I think there should be a clamp down on every type of crime, no matter how small. In Singapore you can't get away with dropping litter or sticking up posters everywhere. And do you know why? If you're caught you get flogged!

The Council and police should challenge the licences of any venue which is advertised on ilegal posters, and the venues should have to specify in contracts with promoters that they mustn't put up illegal posters.
It is great that the Coucil is doing something about it. I complained a few years ago and nothing was done - I wa told there were people in the Concil staff who thought posters for gigs and rave nights looked "edgy".
The Evening Times should do an investigation as to the people behind the large scale flyposting. There is clearly a lot of money behind it, and the Times will have people on the staff with good links to to the advertising and PR industries.
I have heard stories that it can be bad for your health to cross some of the big flyposting gangs, and I bet some PR agencies have links with organised crime - in the same way as some private hire care radio systems do, along with security firms.
This all needs to be exposed.

Here in Sydney, Australia we have contractors (J C Decaux) who go round the city centre on golf buggie type vehicles, they take digital photos of each offending poster, which is then scraped off by them, a further photo is taken & the council is billed for removing that poster, the cost is then passed on to the promoter if they can be traced. Tracing them is the hard part, tho' as some venues promoted are to those "in the know" but still I think the best idea is to fine the venue, they can afford it.

For info the Council does now have a clause in contracts with grant-supported events that advertising the event by flyposting is illegal, will constitute a breach in grant, and will result in grant withdrawal.
The Licensing Board is unable under legislation to put such clauses relating to flyposting in licences, and when it tried to do so in Scotland previously the legal case was lost and set a precedent. Only planning legislation covers flyposting and confirms its illegality.

Good stuff. I've been fed up with posters constantly appearing outside our office for ages. I like that the events/products being promoted are being subverted. Perhaps the licensing for some of these should be accompanied with a warning about illegal advertising.

We need to get something back.

Another great idea by GCC. Lets tackle those who drop fag end / crisp packets and fly post. While our communities are being over-run by drug dealers, paedophiles and gangs of anti social folk causing a rumpus.
I am going to write to the Her Majesty and Tony Blair to see about giving Mr Purcell and his cohorts at the council knighthoods for the fine work they are doing.

Jimbo, you're obsessed with drug dealers.
As I have said before, the dropping of litter can be quashed with wardens and the GCC putting money intothe scheme.
Although I agree with you, the drug dealers and anti-social gangs isn't a council issue, its a police issue.
And I'm sure they're doing what they can, but ridiculous government policies have most of our police force sitting behind desks doing paperwork. Every week, you hear of police raids on houses that contained drugs, so they are trying. But in any country, the war on drugs is going to be a long slow process.
MAybe if people were re-educated or educated in schools at a young age and stopped taking drugs, then there wouldn't be a market for it?

Rab I think your obsessed with litter, I am beginning to think you are one of those litter wardens, walking around glasgow in the sun all day at the expense of the taxpayer.
Didn't realise you were an apologist for Mr Purcell and his cohorts Rab. Then again I should have known because you are always saying how great Glasgow city council are and praising them when they come up with some crazy scheme that is completely out of proportion with the reality of what is really going on in the city.

I havent come on her for a ding-dong with you Jimbo.
But the article is about fly posting, not drug dealers, gangs etc.
There is a problem with my area for gangs also, and I've even heard of a vigilante group being set up (although I don't agree with this, especially if the vigilantes are violent), basically because people are fed up.
I loathe these dealers etc, but I'm not quite ready to shave my head into a mohican, arm myself, and wash all the skunk ****'s off the streets. That's why were moving next year, the police are working with both hands tied behind their back, which is why we never see anyone on the beat.
As for Purcell, he's just another twit that likes to see himself in the paper, the UEFA cup final is a good example.

In parks? doing what? Reading encylopedias? Learning Spanish? Not doing anyone harm? So ado they go there to meditate or discuss the war in Iraq?
You're very naive. I'll put it down to your age.
They go to that park to drink, get drunk, urinate, spit and vomit on the park, and then leave the empty bottles, and sometimes used condoms on the floor for us all to see, when we take our kids to that very same park the next morning.
woo hoo.

No football parks, no clubs nothing for youngsters to do. But lets catch fly posters that is a really major thing. Gordon Brown was due to fly to Iraq today but has delayed it due to influx of fly posters & litter louts.
You really have a problem with young people you have to show them respect and they might show you some back Victor Meldrew

Yeah, lets blame the "we've got nothing to do" syndrome.
All you need is a bit of grass and a ball. Sorted. As for the condoms comment, ha ha ha, praise them for what? Leaving them in the park. Shall we praise junkies for using clean syringes, even though they leave THEM in the park as well. Silly boy.
Kids have got Ipods, phones, playstations, tvs etc and are still bored. I'm only 2 years older than you by the way an dhave nothing against young people, otherwise I wouldn't be involved in youth football.

I can never understand why this practice is not stopped in its tracks by puting a £1,000 fine on every poster a business puts up. The gangs who put them up are just the monkeys. The Organ grinders, who are wealthy individuals get off "scot" free. I once had to point out to a main board member of Scottish Radio Holdings that they were vadalising the city in illegal advertising. MAKE THE ADVERTISERS PAY.

Try plugging a playstation into the park you clown.
Its clowns like you that stop kids enjoying themselves. You are really uneducated and probably get bullied off the local kids because of you attitude.

Rather than complain about advertisment posters and actually do anything we have a cancelled stunt. Well I now know about the cancelled sticker on a poster I will have to phone and check it is still on. How does that benefit me. Everybody is happy to lay blame for messy advertisments but how many people have those very same ads to thank for realising something was happening in their city. I for one have found out about cultural events that i would otherwise have missed out on. I am against any form of censorship which is what it amounts to when the council wish to keep fly posters on one of their profitable city property deals. Just look down from the infirmary at the huge new building project it isn't being built by wimpey or some other profit making enterprise it seems it is a city council venture. I hate to think what is being stolen from the public purse to fund that sorry entrerprise. But at least we can confuse a few concert goers with cancelled stickers.
Great idea about the cancelled stickers, but I hope they stay one step ahead of the promoters - can I suggest in addition to cancelled (as folk will begin to ignore that), they also add in 're-scheduled', 'change of venue', 'change of DJ' etc...that will really p*** em right off. He he...one up to the man (or woman) in the street!!

Brilliant, I hope they are charging them for the removal.
What about a digital photographic database of graffitti vandalism, then when they catch one of the morons in action they will be able to match them to their previous "artworks".
Ideal with CCTV, on the buses especially.

I believe the practice of putting up cancelled stickers on posters was developed by North Lanarkshire Council last year as they started doing it in Motherwell. So it wasn't GCC idea.
There's loads of legal poster sites around the city and drums in the west end which allow promoters to get the message out about events.
Can't be that difficult to spot flyer posters sticking up posters around town. Probably more the fact that very little can be done about them and the council are happy to pick on easy targets..

"Council staff have started painting out illegal adverts [bold]which make the city look run down[/bold] , to ensure the companies who produce the ads are just wasting their money."
I'm not a fan of flyposting but I think this tactic is a bit stupid - won't the city look even more run down if it appears that all the gigs are cancelled (i.e. the performers don't want to come here or no-one can afford to go and see them)?

I was back in Glasgow last year after an absence of 30 years. I was disgusted at the state of the place. I praise the council for what they are doing. Hopefully, when I return, it will be a place to be proud of.

Re Rex features comment on fly postering gangs and "some PR agencies have links to organised crime" - I think "PR" may have been confused with "publicists" as illegal fly-posting is not part of a PR remit. PR is defined by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations as the business of "reputation management". Tactics like media relations, keeping on top of issues that affect an organisation and issuing responses, plus writing e-newsletters are all part of that. Illegal fly posting is clearly not the best way to manage an organisation's reputation.

You can't just charge the promoter on the poster. Otherwise, if I want to stick it to my competitors, I could just stick up fictitious events with their contact info on it. Then they would get charged, even though they didn't put the poster up.
Of course, then they'd do the same to me, and I'd use more and bigger posters, and he'd use even bigger ones and soon there will be a poster so big it will destroy us both.

Two can play at that game. Glasgow Fight Back!
As I read about Glasgow the "clever" use of "CANCELLED" stickers for covering up gig-posters. Do we not all know that these posters are part of urban culture? It's time to fight back!
Use The Cancelled Sign’s Natural Enemy.
I have posted stickers with "NOT" and "UN-" words on them to a Cafe Press site. I hope that Glasgowsians (I hope they call themselves that) use the Sticker to fight back!
Long-live the gig-poster... World Wide!

Great idea, tickets and tearing them down gives no incentive for companies to stop plastering posters but when they begin to realize that all the work and effort they do is futile they'll quickly move on. Large cities should really look into adopting similar systems.

Why not remove the permit for an event if the promoters have put up posters? If the permit includes the notice that illegal posting will cancel the event itself, then the promoting companies won't have any interest in finding ways to keep putting the posters up.

How about considering the possibility that flyposts are part of the rich tapestry of our cities. The majority are put up by people that make little money, have little support or funding, yet continue to ply their trade for the love of music and art and society etc etc. The movement to eradicate flyposts is stuffy and outdated. It is a waste of time and money and manpower and those that pursue it really ought to be ashamed of themselves. The events on these posters bring people together. Why not start concentrating on crime that seperates and alienates people. By goodness, i'm a badly educated townie and even I can see how ridiculous this whole business is.

I agree with the last two posts. These handbills, posters and what-not are part of the urban tapestry that we should enjoy. These events bring people together and the people/bands/artists that these images support really do bring the comunity together. So once again suggest people go and create "NOT" or "UN-" stickers to trump the "CANCELLED" stickers. Check CafePress Dot Com Slash NotCancelled for some simple ones that I have posted. Please use them People of GLASGOW!

I enjoy the art involved with this sort of advertising as well. I'm not really concerned with small operations, but there isn't any excuse at all for the larger promotional companies to be using illegal tactics like this. There are perfectly legal alternatives available. They've obviously got the money -- pay for some billboards. Poster store windows. Buy radio or television time. And as for whether it is a waste of manpower to take them down? No, it's definitely not. The people who put them up certainly aren't about to do it, and otherwise you'd be left with the tattered remains hanging around looking shabby months after the event is over. Let the crews stop doing their work, and see how "beautified" your city becomes.
I WOULD however suggest that more communities provide legal areas / bulletin boards for posting this kind of thing. Those who can't afford to go large-scale deserve space as well.

This is a rip-off of something the artist Jonathan Monk did about 15 years ago, which at the time the council was up in arms about.
They turn every available up-and-coming residential area into a pub theme park (hello Ashton Lane!) and then spend our tax money trying to reverse the damage they've deliberately inflicted. Maybe they could spend some of it on preventing **** arseholes waking me up at 4am every Tuesday morning? Just a suggestion.

We had a band in our town called "Post No Bills".
Flyers could be tolerated, but some protested when stapled to wooden telephone poles, as the staples tore the pole apart. Some large posters pasted to flat surfaces however, were there YEARS later.

lame. lame. lame. Who cares if there are adverts up all around. it makes things a little more colorful, and makes people aware of a new product or event. i don't see anything wrong with that. people take themselves to seriously when they believe they need to be in control of what other people want. if you dont want to see it, ignore it! is it really that big of a problem? i dont thing so!

Why not get rid of all the product advertising and billboards from the streets? Might be a better way to beautify Glasgow than removing informative and usually well-designed gig posters. Oh, I forgot - one of those two sets pays a lot of money and is therefore intrinsically better...

Well done Glasgow. I used to promote music events in your city, I gave up because of recalcitrant attitude of Glasweegans from the council to wannabies in expensive clothes. Glasgow has a fine tradition of culture that is being destroyed by an unenlightened council and public. Good graphic design and good street art pieces brighten up what is to be fair a pretty ugly city centre.
Of course you know what the answer to removing the posters is, somthing that no Glasgow native would ever think of.
SOAP.

To everyone saying promoters should use the internet - that tends to work only when people already know your band/event. You have to be registered with the band's email list/myspace/bebo to get word of when gigs are on. The whole point of fly-posters is to get the people that [italic]don't[/italic] already know, which is usually the entire population of the city minus a handfull of the bands mates!
How can the council claim to be so proud of Glasgow's grand tradition of live music, then seemingly do everything it can to stifle it?

How about fly posting all sorts of false information about the council?
Advertise things with council numbers as the contact details.
If you want to play games like this, don't be surprised when people play games back.

I think it is great that GCC only want to pick on the small promoters, while major organised flyposters are allowed to flypost their products in the City & have legal rotundas in the West End. This could only happen in Glasgow.
