This is the same company that eagerly put signs up in all of it's English stores, declaring none of it's poultry product came from Scotland, when that dead swan with avian flu washed up on a Scottish beach a couple of years ago...

Al, be honest - none of the supermarkets are any better than the other when it comes to ethics, or morals.
Profit margins are a different story.
So - if you want an ethical supermarket, don't shop in the UK. Failing that shop locally!

Great news - that Somerfield store on Byres Road is a shocker and only appeals to students and the poor. Bring on Waitrose!

All to easy for Waitrose mind you, only having branches south of the border at the time.

oK, Big al, I'll give you that one!
But, if Supermarkets whoever they were really wanted to supply locally produced foods, they would stop supplying out of season, and worldly produced fruit and veg.
Many of the tropical fruits and veg are often far more expensive, and if we really saw just how much goes to waste, either in transit, on putting out on display, or from failure to sell it all - we'd be far more in favour of locally produced, and delivered fruit and veg.
Just how many people even boter to look at the location of their fruit, veg or foods they buy?
And, what are we doing to change how we shop?
Maybebigger questions than this article covers.
But - something we should be considering, before Waitrose comes to town.
Maybe we could be challenging Waitrose more on its policies before it comes north of the border. And maybe we could stand up for our rights and what we want as customers, instead of bleating and moaning about it to all the wrong places!
I hearby end this rant . . .

Yes, Waitrose are a big store with the prices to match, are they not part of the John Lewis Group of companies?
Anyway, you look at the snootier parts of London - Hampstead, Chiswick etc, you'll find that this is the place to be, of course I often wondered as a kid living in London when shops like McDonalds and Waitrose, etc would ever appear up here (if they ever would). Apart from Selfridges, and roughly 25 years down the line I think they have all made their mark in the city and some have made a huge impact, but that's down to smart marketing of course!

it amazes me how so many of the readers like to high jack the items printed. anyway scotland /the u.k. can.t provide sufficient food for its population its a non stop convoy of trucks from spain france europe heading for the chnl tunnel with your all round year fresh produce and even if you could produce a good supply of fresh foods the world market economy is not interested they seek out their best prices where they can get such like in australia there is little if anything that is not home grown but in our sup/markets prawns /china kiwi fruit/france mango/mexico grapes /usa not to forget re irn bru from u.k. as for sup/markets australia has been controlled by two woolworths/not u.k s and coles/k/mark i think its 80% between them but thankfully in recent years aldi has arrived so i will high jack this item to mention its a living hell today in the outskirts of brisbane 36 celcius it is

I cant wait for a Waitrose. I know its expensive but it comes out tops time and time again in animal welfare, so that makes it worth the money for me.
I dont eat meat, but if Im shopping in a store that sells it, I want to know theyve taken animal welfare into account. I dont want to support them otherwise.
