A PLEA from Strathclyde Police for help with its £5.5million bill for the Faslane 365 demo has been rejected by the Scottish Government.

The year of anti-nuclear protests at the Clyde naval base caused public uproar because of the huge policing costs and officers being moved from community posts to cover the blockades.

Strathclyde Police Board wrote to the Scottish Government last month asking for help footing the bill after the issue was raised by Chief Constable Sir Willie Rae.

The cost until the end of July - including overtime and vehicle hire - was £5.1m.

This figure is expected to rise to £5.5m when the last two months are added on, including the bill for the huge final-day blockade on October 1, when 184 demonstrators were arrested.

In a letter to the government, the board said the year-long demo was "highly unusual" and a "direct consequence of the location of the (UK) government establishment" within the force area.

Board clerk Mike Blair also said support had been provided to Scots police forces for "other unusual events" such as the G8 summit in 2005.

He requested a grant to meet the costs and asked whether any help could be offered in the event of similar protests in the future.

But in a reply Bridget Campbell, director of the police section of the Justice Department, said: "The need to police Faslane will have been built into the force's budgets.

"It does not seem to me, therefore, there is a need to provide specific grant support in this instance."

On the prospect of future protests depleting staff levels, Ms Campbell also offered no support.

Board chairman Paul Rooney said: "I felt the response was unsatisfactory. I will be now taking up the matter with (Justice Secretary) Kenny MacAskill directly."

This all seems a little confused. I guess that the Scottish Government are being asked to help, because they control the Police budget. However, it's not their decision to have nuclear weapons in Scotland.

The letter states that Faslane365 was a "direct consequence of the location of the (UK) government establishment". If this is the case, shouldn't the same logic be applied as with the policing of football matches - i.e., that the MoD, a department of the UK Government, should pay for the policing?

We can only assume that the Scottish Goverment are therefore supporting Faslane 365 by refusing to pay for policing .....

Solution......

No pay ....... no policing.... then watch what happens..

This whole situation is farcical to say the very least..... over policing of Faslane. Over reactions, and unneccessary arrests, adding more costs to tax-payers for the paperwork to be processed, and court cases to be seen to.

All completely non-sensical.

If so many are opposed to this Nuclear Base, then maybe we should be seriously debating the issue of scrapping trident within the communities, and public at large.

After all it's out taxes which foot all the bills to supposedly pay the police, and run Faslane. So - lets start asking serious questions here.

And looking at the excessive numbers of police at all Faslane Marches, Demonstrations and Protests. The police simply antagonise those who are using their democratic rights to protest. And their bullying tactics are a factor to be considered in this whole picture.

If the Police Bill is not to be picked up, then lets hope its due to the unnecessary and disgusting waste of our money by them, which has been the deciding factor here. If so, thank the lord for common sense in some, if not all of our MSP's!

They should send the bill to Westminster, they are the ones who put this base there not the Scottish Government. So bigjimmy (somehow I doubt it) they are unwashed ? Well at least they are trying to do something about the state of this world, what are you up to ?

Exactly observer,
These people who have set up their peace camp are unfortunately amongst the minority of us - who still have our strong morals, and principles left, when it comes to justice, and highlighting the wrongs of this world.

I have met, spoken to and mixed with these unwashed people you speak of, but really - they are having far less of an impact on the environment at large than us gas guzzlers, and wasters of electricity, taking everything for granted in our comfortable living arrangements.

Perhaps we should try their way of life, and that simplicity which many of us probably would love to have. Instead of the complexities of paying our bills on time, meeting employers demands, the stress of our P.C's crashing, and the demands our kids place on us for the latest of computer / play - station games.

I admire those at Faslane Peace Camp, for their perseverance, and determination to highlight this outragious expense to us the tax-payers.
