There was Glass attacks in early 80s in certain bars and clubs,They brought in Plastic glasses back then the violence continued But at least the injuries with glass stopped,You would have thought it wouldnt have taken over 20yrs to work this out!

I can see that this measure is necessary. But surely the main point is being missed.
Why is it necessary?
Why are Glaswegians at the mercy of violent scum every weekend?
What is so deeply wrong with our society and culture that we tolerate this?
It is at the stage now where you can't enjoy a few beers or a bottle of wine at a picnic in Glasgow nor can you enjoy your favourite tipple (which you've just paid an exorbitant price for) in the vessel it was intended.
Why do the masses suffer at the hands of these sociopaths who think nothing of maiming or killing?

plastic glasses......
what are we children?
beer in bogging in plastic glasses.
they should ban glass in the smelly jakey pubs, like the ones at the barra's and leave well alone the more civil establishments in the city.
must be great being a tourist coming here to see a cultural city like glasgow, and getting you drink in a plastic glass and told to smoke outside

Another example of interference where it is not asked for.Ive been im many licensed premises over the years and am fortunate never to have encountered this behaviour so why should this change be made due to the actions of a small minority ?

The masses suffer because the courts are not willing or not able to hand out punishment that fits the crime.
The "do gooder, rehabilitators" RULE!
Hypothetically, it would be very interesting to see how these "do gooder, rehabilitators" react if it's their family member that is slashed, raped, glassed, broken into, or stabbed!
MAKE THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME!

I would say that this sounds like one of the most under-funded, backward and amateur sounding reports I've ever come across. If you do a report by gathering data in such a shoddy fashion then its no surprise that you get a basic "ban it" response. Unbelievable.
Now banning glass in restaurants seems to be the most ridiculous thing this man is countenancing (what about the knives lying on the table?) but actually its all pretty ridiculous. As in most things any strategy has to be more subtle than that.
Glass is a danger in nightclubs; people are jumping around, they are more drunk and they are populated on the whole with young people full of p*sh and vinegar. So don't have any glass on the dance floor, its a common sense health and safety thing more than anything else. Now when it comes to pubs where, as a whole, a lot less violence is seen then we have to take on a new policy. The License of the pub should cover the license to serve drinks in glasses. Too many fights in that pub, they lose their glass license, easy. So violent pubs don't have glass, hurrah. Those pubs well policed, not full of ned scum and populated with happy taxpayers who know its wrong to "glass" someones face can happily drink out a nice pint (with the proper taste). The restaurants should be left alone. And this organisation at the old polytechnic should never be given any money to do a study again. Here endeth the lesson.

Do people really have the attitude that it is ok to glass, stab, or assault people because they don't think they'll face severe punishment? Or are there more complex reasons?
Why do we have so many angry young men roaming the streets searching for 'respect'?

Talk about missing the dartboard with this legislation. We have banned ciggarettes in nightclubs and they haven't been proven to cause injury like alcohol. If the person was not **** he probably wouldn't have wanted to fight in the first place only problem is if you ban booze nobody will go except the boring twats who have more than enough to do in our modern cities. Glass in nightclubs is not a danger compared to an exotic drug that has such devastating effects on humans that after only a little our driving is so impaired we are a danger on the roads on the streets and in the clubs. Clearly a scientific experiment is needed to clear up wether it is the alcohol or the glasses that are causing the injury. So lets legalise E acid and cannabis and open up a whole new range of nightclubs and then we can compare and contrast the levels of violence in the cannabis Ecstasy and acid clubs compared to the alcohol clubs.

If so I understand why my "do gooder" alert is buzzing!!
The basic problem we are suffering is that there is no or VERY little deterent to crime today. If prison was the draconian experience it should be how many "first offenders" would go on to be "repeat offenders"? Making prison the worst experience you could have, may not "rehabilitate", but neither is our present system rehabilitating. The criminal element love "rehabilitators"!!
Making prison the worst experience you could have might just make the criminal element think twice and if that fails, at least we have punished the bast***s!

I had the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time ten years ago when a thug decided to throw pint glasses in a pub. I have carried ugly facial scars ever since.
Every new meeting, through work or socially, you know people are wondering 'How did he get that?
So with hindsight I wish I wasnt in that pub that night, though if there were no glass tumblers present I wouldnt be writing this today.

Have any of these morons ever eaten in a nice restaurant where a knife and fork is required? Do they have any idea what sort of impression of the city tourists and other visitors will have when their bottles of red wine are decanted into plastic tumblers and the like or where people can't be trusted to hold anything in their hands which has potential to be used as a weapon? Will they be banning knives from restaurants next? What about coffee shops? A cup of hot coffee thrown in the wrong direction could badly burn someone, after all! Surely if one bad scalding is saved, it's worth it, etc., etc.
This type of moronic 'ban everything' approach to deal with any social problem is pathetic, reducing everyone's quality of life to try and offset their complete failure to deal with social problems.
Why don't they ban cars and buses to reduce pollution and traffic congestion while they're at it?

twentyq, sorry to hear about you injuries
but the problem is the clown who threw the glass, not the glass itself
any form of assault should be 3 years in bar-l
no questions, no parole, no stupid bloody tags
see how many wanna be hardmen walk about the town with that hanging over them

Until the people of glasgow learn to live like humans they cannot possibly be treated like humans. If you want to frequent places that attract people who feel the need to get out their skull and throw things then you deserve to drink your beer out of a plastic "glass". The measure should not be city wide - but certainly a stipulation for places that have a high number of idiots who drink there and a high incidence of attacks.

Most places they need to ban glass. Ther e are to many idiots out there. But there should be special places for grown ups and tourists to go where you could have glass. You'd need a note from your mum, and probably some kind of good behaviour bond. Everyone else, gets plastic.
