CCTV cameras are to be installed in Glasgow's Merchant City in a crackdown on street crime.

The devices will be erected at nine hotspots in the heart of the city's shopping, drinking and dining district in a £300,000 investment.

One of the cameras will be placed on the edge of Shipbank Lane, home to the historic Paddy's Market, which has been blighted by violent crime, theft and drug offences.

Two are planned for Ingram Street and one each in Cochrane Street, High Street, Bell Street, Trongate, Saltmarket and Parnie Street.

It's part of ongoing efforts to transform the Merchant City which fell into decline in the 1960s but now has luxury flats, nightlife, designer shops and an artistic quarter.

At present the Merchant City has only one CCTV camera, at Glasgow Cross.

The new cameras are being jointly funded by the agency now in charge of the city's CCTV cameras, Glasgow Community and Safety Services and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow.

They will be installed over the next few months and will help both people feel safer, according to Councillor Gordon Matheson whose ward includes the Merchant City.

He said: "We have been campaigning for years to get CCTV coverage in the Merchant City.

"Although the area does not have a huge crime problem, residents do have concerns about noise and anti-social behaviour."

Police statistics show 1926 crimes were committed at or near Paddy's Marketduring 2005/2006.

As the Evening Times reported in August, Councillor Matheson called for the market to be closed, branding it "a crime-ridden midden.".

Welcoming the decision on the cameras, depute council leader Jim Coleman said: "The installation will increase re-assurance for all who live, work, visit and socialise in the area."

Over 300 security cameras cover Glasgow and are monitored at the CCTV base in Blochairn.

Hey Vera - I was about to make that very point!

This disgusting waste of money will do little to prevent the actual crime from happening, as the police are hardly famous for their fast response!

This is just a simple case of Gordon Matheson demonstrating his Political clout.

Try bidding for this kind of scheme in areas of far greater need...... no sorry the MSP's / Councillors for these area's are too busy swanning around pretending to do their jobs!

What crime in the Merchant City? Very bizarre. What i think this is about is the posh yuppie flats in the area. A lot of these flats are used by civil servants and bigwigs has a weekend pad. And they are too scared to walk down the Trongate. Tough. If these inadequates cant even walk down a city street then they should get the train back to Edinburgh. Simple.

Well then KM, thats where calling your local Police, and finding our who your community officer comes in.

No number of CCTV Cameras, or money invested will fully stop the crime from taking place.

Community intervention, and setting up your own "Neighbourhood Watch" where people get together, report anything suspicious, and look out for one another is the key here.

Bringing communities together!

All CCTV does is move the criminals on, or push them along somewhere else.

This is merely a case of N.I.M.B.Y'ism. Close doors in Partick have been kicked in so many times, their Intercome Systems are pointless.
Urinating in doorways, druggies shouting up to windows, and looking for their next fix.

Merchant city is just not the first place that should have such disgusting amounts of money spent on it - outer city areas, and those with far higher crime rates need this far more than the pretentious parts of the increasingly upmarket Merchant City.

Hi
Funny how merchant city can get more cameras ans Shawlands can't even get any at all we are now classed as city centre status and we have vandalism shouting at all hours of the night fights and all other things happening. We are told that the local business have to pay so much towards the cost of such a scheme.
One rule for some and another for others

Exactly Andy,
Maybe we should see just how much our Councillors cosy in with those who pull the strings! As Gordon Matheson clearly knows the right people here.

Time to call our Local MSP's and Councillors to book here, and see how much they are willing to speak on our behalf.

Lets start representing the forgotten areas, and stop this farcical over-investment, gentrification, overdevelopment, and singling out of areas like Merchant City.

Divvy up the money a bit more, and give all of Glasgow added security and safety. And see that CCTV is not the only answer.

Police presence & the addition of "Help Buttons" which link up to the Police, allowing the public to speak to / havea direct link with help, like that on Sauchiehall Street.
