What is wrong with you people? This is a job well done!
I visited Vancouver this summer, they have the Winter Olympics in 2010. It's NOT the Summer Olympics which is viewed as a much bigger event BUT the city is alive with excitement and the people are optimistic. They are building a new rapid transit system for the Games, the construction of new housing, thereby jobs being generated by The Games, is amazing.
For goodness sake switch of your computers and go out and live a little in the REAL world.
I don't think either of you "Stewie or yerauldda", speak for the "average Glaswegian or at least I sincerely hope you don't.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL INVOLVED IN WINNING THIS MAJOR EVENT FOR GLASGOW!

Part of being a Glaswegian is being proud of your city and this is our chance to show it to the rest of the world.
This is just the next step up from Glasgow's success at hosting the Champion's League and Uefa Cup finals in recent years. Also, Glasgow is a major conference destination. I don't see how holding the Commonwealth Games is any different??
I would say the comments by Stewie Griffin and yarauldda are an embarassment to Glasgow. The news has just been announced the first comments are just slating it.

What an achievement for the city by the bid team. At 47 votes to 24 the professionalism and persistance paid off. The acceleration of the city's regeneration and inspiration of a generation of children will give a real boost to Scotland.

Glasgow wins the 2014 Commonwealth Games.....

As another cynic, and realist - I have to say this expenditure had better be worthwhile, and sustainable. Despite all the builders, and other contractors given valuable work in the preparation for the mere 11 days in July 2014, there will be many drawbacks!
The most worrying thing seems to be the risk Glasgow will be another London, with masses of debt, and decades of paying off the huge loans needed to regenerate itself.
Major work must be carried out on a wide range of areas, not least the Leisure / Sports Facilities needed. And kowing their upkeep way beyond 2014 is being considered equally.
Theres Glasgows delapitated, 111 year old "Toy - Train" Subway System, which even if it does have an additional station serving the Commonwealth Village, it will not be nearly enough to prove itself viable on the world stage.
See:[bold] http:www.subway2020.
com[/bold]
Glasgow must be one of the few cities that still is yet to have a ring road system, which links up the M74, and takes the horrendous levels of traffic off the congested, accident prone M8.
Glasgow has still failed to provide an Airport Rail Link with its city.
Glasgow's Bus Infrastructure Service since its de-regulation, has seen rogue operators with their filthy buses. It's main provider has become overpriced, profiteering and completely inneficient in serving isolated parts of Glasgow which still have no linking bus routes.
Until we have far more effort to get cars OFF the roads, and prioritise Public Transport far more we will never compete on the world stage with out infrastructure, which is frankly a joke.
This result for Glasgows City Councillors must be a [bold] HUGE WAKE UP CALL[/bold]for all Councillors concerned, in integrating, and joining up Glasgows fragmented infrastructure.
Lets just hope SPT and other transport agencys all wake up and bring their trains, buses and Glasgows subway into line with the 21st Century.
AND FINALLY - GLASGOWS PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN. OUTER LYING AREAS, REPAIRS, EVERY DAY MAINTAINENCE, AND RUNNING OF THE CITY MUST NOT SUFFER.
AND IF GLASGOW IS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN INCLUSION OF ALL ITS PEOPLE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THIS 2014 BID FAR MORE TRANSPARENCY AND OPENESS MUST BE SEEN FROM GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL IN FUTURE.

Transparancy from GCC??? A sporting contest in itself. The cost of this will run into the billions, it will not benefit the ordinary Glaswegian and we will be stuck with many white elephant sport stadia.
The majority of it will be in Dalmarnock. Not exactly the heart of the city or easily accessible, is it.

What a miserable, negative, disappointing, childish bunch of comments. A disservice to Glasgow and the majority of Glaswegians.
Get a grip of yourselves - winning the Commonwealth Games can only be good for the regeneration and profile of Glasgow. This city has come a long way in recent years, and the Games - while being a challenge for all involved - will take it further still.
Today is for celebrating Glasgow's success, not focusing on the negatives. Just enjoy the moment. Yes - there is a lot of work to do, and there will be expense: but the motivational factor this award could have cannot be ignored.
I suppose if we beat the Italians at Hampden next Saturday there will be complaints about that as well.
Come on - be proud of your city, its people and its achievement.
And by the way, I'm a Londoner who wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the UK than this fantastic city.

I for one am really happy about Glasgow winning the games. I live in the east end, maybe not near Dalmarnock, but well done Glasgow for winning and even competing.
How annoying is it that people dont appreciate all the hard work done by the people promoting and working on the bid. The amount of jobs and new homes that will be created as a result will be a huge benefit to the city and will help promote the east end, which as we all know doesnt have the best reputation.

In a city as divided as Glasgow its good to see that all the money and redevelopment will be right outside the door of one of our famous football clubs, whilst the other can make do with the eggchasing but I forgot Govan doesnt need any money or regeneration.

I would like the East End to be regenerated. But I would also like the same to happen to other areas of the city. And I would also like to ask precisely what benefits the wealthy Celtic Football Club will be getting from this event (surely no-one would want to sweep such a reasonable question under the carpet?).

Read through the comments so far, and I`m SHOCKED at the amount of people who are actually FOR these games.
Only the millionaire hotel owners, bar owners and restraunt owners will be delighted at this. Possibly the bus companies and the taxi drivers too.
BUT HERES A THOUGHT .......... all the "regeneration" work and other building work thats going to commence ....... HOW MANY GLASWEGIANS WILL GET JOBS????
It will be Poles, Romanians etc etc etc. GDC has NEVER insisted on any locals being employed on ANY job they pay for. The reason? Its unfair on non Glaswegians!!!!!
This is BAD for Glasgow and BAD for Scotland.

This is great news for Scotland but need not cost a lot of money to the Scottish Government or Glasgow District Council. Mr Salmond should get a letter in the post to the National Lottery Crowd. Over the years The people of "London" have had hundreds of Millions of pounds for their "Dome" "the Royal Albert Hall and the future "London Olympics". The Scottish People pay a lot of money into the "fat cat" Lottery but when was the last time a major project in Scotland was paid for by them. Now is the time to address this and a special Lottery fund set up for the Scottish Commonwealth games just like the one for the London Olympics. At least it would benifit all the people of our Scottish nation and not just a small group residing in the South East corner of England.

[/quote] Well said thistlemad, i run a small business & recently the jobcentre sent me two Poles & three Romanians for vacancies..The job requires a command of English which none of them had but still they come.........

Well done Mr Salmond. Nigeria's bid went wayward when big Jack got the boot.
I hear one of the reasons we got it was due to possible levels of corruption in Nigeria. No one could have told them about glasgow labour councillers.
Any truth Bridgette McConnell had put forward a community centre in the north of Glasgow to get the opening ceremony??

Well done Glasgow and give credit to the Former FM Jack McConnell. No doubt his partner who as CEO at CS Glasgow possibly had an influence also. As for those who moan about the debt, lets not waste a good opportunity to spend some of that capital on infrastructure, taking the underground extension as an example of what has already proven to be an essential part of Glasgow.

It doesn't inspire hope that 3 of the biggest 'backers' of the bid were Clydesdale Bank, First Group, and BBC Scotland. Three more incompetent, corrupt, money-grabbing and deceitful organisations do not exist in Scotland!! This is just my personal opinion based on my dealings with them, of course..

Yes, well done indeed to these transparent, honest, decent and upholding Politicians.
Who represent their electorate so well!
Who take our hard earned tax paying money, and squander it on their expenses, and exorbitant wages. Go on holidays, hold City Chamber functions/Events, and take perks all funded by us tax payers!
Well done indeed!
It is clear that this result will have many advantages - but the disadvantages are clearly not being viewed, considered or openly aired nearly enough.
If this long term project is to be a success we must see our politicians engaging with their electorate far more sincerely.
Not like the hypocrisy of the Post Office fiasco where those councillors who voted for the post office closures are now handing out petitions to save the very Post Offices they voted to close.
Celebrations may go on for the next few days, but once the reality sinks in, lets hope the Councillors and Politicians can live up to their promises, and keep Glasgows "Joe Public" well served too.

I am one of the [italic]average[/italic] Glaswegians who is absolutely over the moon with this result, although a couple of things spring to mind regarding it.
The SNP in Edinburgh have only recently stated that they intend to delay the M74 extension by 3-4 years citing planning problems, even although a lot of the route has already been cleared. It looks like they need the money to help fulfil some of their empty promises. I wonder what the Glasgow Bid Team will think of this, if indeed they do delay it.
Another thing is that I remember when we were the City of Culture for a year and as an [italic]average[/italic] Glaswegian I saw absolutely no benefit from it. I only hope it will be different this time.
The fact that it is the East End that will be regenerated only helps to spread the benefits of sports/leisure facilities throughout the city and not concentrate everything in the City Centre or West End

Exactly. Purcell and his cronies have their heid up their lower orifices so much of the time, they wouldn't know what was going on right under their nose!
Some priorities will have to change.
Councillors will have to buck up their ways.
Electorate start using your councillors, at their surgeries, and questioning them.
The freedom of information act is there to allow us to find out issues like how many million ? of our £'s has been spent on this 2014 bid ? despite its success!!!
Questions may need asked, and transport infrastructures completed. But, we must stand up and be heard if this successful announcment is not going to see our Council Tax increased.
Especially, when there is no way of knowing just who will really benefit in the long term, 7 years down the line and beyond.
Congratulations ( Begrudgedly) to Glasgow!

Just where are the priorities? I am homeless, like many others and I sleep on the living floor of relatives and I am a pensioner. I am still waiting the offer of a house. regeneration shouldn't have had to wait on folk playing games, it should have been started and finished long ago.
With a bit of luck folk like me in the future will be in a minority and like the influxing foreigners we should be able to demand housing and civil rights in our own country

Exactly George,
No matter what side of the debate people are on. Whatever their feeling are [bold]there are many problems Glasgow still has to face up to.[/bold]
Glasgow City Councillors seem to want to ignore the problem of homelessness, sweep it under the carpet, and like unemployment and other long term health problems: like drug addiction, alcoholism, and a shortage of beds in nursing homes, or hospices - where's the funding there?
The need for [bold]Glasgow City Council[/bold] to [bold]open its eyes[/bold] and deal with its own people, and their problems, help them first is essential.
If in seven years time we still haven't eliminated homelessness, and the other problems mentioned this will be a sad indictment on Glasgow and it's politicians.

Ah yes, a city where a car can't display an England flag without being wrecked, is now to host the games of the Commonwealth, an organisation headed by HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Ah yes, under the scrutiny of the world's media, what an embarrassment this sad little city is going to be.

Having had time to think about this, after looking at all the comments, i have to agree that the games are something most Glaswegians didnt ask for and didnt want. The city's infrastructure will not cope with the games. Secondly the transport issues are a absolute nightmare. The Commonwealth Games will be a curse on Scotland because of a clique who decided to push something on to Glasgow, that it wont be able to deal with. Prediction: Expect every single transport and building decision to be turned into a referendum on Glasgow poitics used by the clowns at the Hollyrood brothel.

The latest opinion poll was 86% hoping for the winning of the games.
It seems the minority are posting on this site.
Great for Glasgow and Scotland.
Much of this building and modernisation programme throughout Glasgow would have progressed anyway. FACT.
Now that Glasgow has won the games the PEOPLE of Glasgow will benefit substancially.
Education, Education, Education... Generations of Labour failure shows on the negative submissions.
The East End has waited a long, long time for news like this. They deserved better and now they shall.
The persons who bring a certain football club into this debate should get a life.
Well done again, "GLESGA"

WE already have that here and we've never had the games because as a city which was slaves for England's dominance across the world, we were allergic to sport and the arts as a whole, which is pathetic, so what will it be like ten years after they take place - Glasgow 2024 could be a very dark place!

Yes, only the narrow minded few like will have such a poor and negative outlook :-)
What happened after the games in Edinburgh back in 1986? Ten years after the event, the city gave us Trainspotting! WE already have that here and we've never had the games because as a city which was slaves for England's dominance across the world, we were allergic to sport and the arts as a whole, which is pathetic, so what will it be like ten years after they take place - Glasgow 2024 could be a very dark place!

Thenkfully 86% of my Glaswegian compatriots and Scots elsewhere are happy about the games coming to Glasgow.

Education, Education, Education....
Oh! how Labour has failed.
Never mind we have 7 years to progress under a new Scottish Government as I cannot see a change to the past incompetance.

So yes, unless the masses are educated to be allergic to Labour, never mind the Tories, we might actually see a rosier future in this country!

incidentall Missing City, if you aren't already a member of your community Council I'd advise you to become one.
We need ambassadors like yourself to represent the apathetic whingers, who ruin or don't even cast their votes. And have the cheek to complain later.
Public Meetings are also a great way to have ones voice heard, minuted and even quoted by the media. I just wish more people stood up and spoke out on issues they believed in.
Changing the subject here, but - The Botanics Meeting for Groups Representatives should be interesting. Lets hope it pulls everyone together, and shows GCC this fight is not over.

Thank goodness the Commonwealth committee do not read this website or we would never have won the bid.
Surely you narrow minded, racist, homophobic, short sighted moaners should be reading the Sun, or better still the daily sport, As that appears to be the level at which your minds are able to function at.
Comments such as 'glasgow folk will not see any benefit' or ' asylum seekers will take all the jobs ' shows a basic lack of understanding of how a local / national economics work, as well as displaying racist narrow minded cynicism.
**** of and read a paper/rag more in keeping with your pathetic small time mentality

Hugo,
Before you tar us all with the same brush here, get your facts right thankyou. . . . .
[italic]Surely you narrow minded, racist, homophobic, short sighted moaners should be reading the Sun, or better still the daily sport, As that appears to be the level at which your minds are able to function at.[/italic]
The "racist" or "homophobic" comments are all but one or two, and even then you're scraping the bottom of the barrell in saying they are so.
Biffo The Bear was quite right in highlighting Poles or Romanians coming into this country without enough grasp of the english language.
It is hardly too much to ask, or expect those E.U. Member States to ensure their migrants, or residents can speak english reasonably well before coming into the UK.
And I say that with many Polish friends, and as someone who is happy to have a more diverse, multi -cultural UK. It is us Brits who are the lazy b*ggers when it comes to finding work & looking after our health.
Thats whats so farcical about this bid being won by Glasgow. I mean - what are they going to have as the sponsor of this event Chip Shops, Alcohol Companies, (B***fast) or certain fast food burger chains.
This debate has nothing to do with sexual preference, or race, any fool can see that!
Those who turn this thread into a slagging match, or call others "idiots", or "numpties" just because their views differ have lost the plot themselves.
Time for our politicians to wake up or shut up!
And for those who think this is wonderful, fine - but, lets see their smiles gradually wiped off their faces when GCC ar*ses up their ability to balance the budget.Tax-payers beware!

Quite right Biffo! Some people are either never happy, or want to pick a fight, or disagree so much they'll do so with their shadow.

People power how can you say we non voters winge later of course we winge you numpty they are thieving council scum and a stupid non event that was a total disaster financially the last time it was in glasgow has been incorrectly portrayed as a financial boon. A huge amount of money is going to come pouring into the city is that before or after all the useless improvements are carried out. After all we will probably have to pay for new facilities at a rate that would make the scottish parliment seem like a shrewd investment. Lets see well need subway links and of course high speed rail links with the channel tunnel. An upgrade of glasgow airport but at least we will be able to use hampden for the purpose its design team strived for as a running track.

Oh my god, it is no wonder people leave Scotland, with opinions like that nothing positive will ever be achieved. Of course there will be a price tag, when has anything been free! But think of the revenue it will bring in, not to mention it might actually promote a healthy lifestyle for the up and coming youth. If we all kept thinking this way then nothing will change and in a hundred yrs this message board will have the same narrow minded, negative and down right closed minded view points it has now!! I for one will be there with my family to cheer on Glasgow..

Johnny, you clearly misunderstoon the contect in what I was saying!

I was saying to Missing City that those who do not vote, destroy their vote or use it appropriately have no right to complain later.
We have a democratic process, which on average only 30% of people bothered to turn out and vote. Leaving &) WHO DIDN'T VOTE! ( NUMPTIES)
So, whinging later relating to this Successful 2014 Commonwealth Bid, or whinging later in relation to this incompetant council are not exactly the same thing.
Anyway, if your'e criticising this bid also - as I have done - whats the point in argueing!

I've only voted twice in my life
1997 to get The Tories out
2007 to get New Labour out (Had interview with Daddy Jack the Thursday proir to the election with a major national Sunday Newspaper - seems to me that he was on to a winner (taking the dishevelled public vote for granted) and those who defected were in fact protestors, as if it was a rule of law on life in Scotland that the main condition is to vote Labour - no surprise he's now frustrated by his own pompousness.
I actually wrote to him in 2003 but never mentioned at that meeting, I don't think he ever saw what I had written, but his parliamentary adviser certainly did - Bill Forbes from Subway 2020 just got a copy of this last week, has anybody heard from him by the way?
My user title on here is also the name for a film that me and my very good friend have devised and completed in June of this year - they can't just sweep it all under the carpet as if it didn't exist
People remember where corrupt Politicians choose to forget!!

So Missing City your an employed journalist!
Wish I was, although, with the way Papers are so controlled by the council, and the powers that be - i.e. The E.T. how are the real stories meant to get out.
Ironic really that despite all the damage done by Politicians in the past, people still are foolish enough to vote back in the opposition.
i.e. Labour - Tories - New Labour - SNP - ? ?
Just as with the Scottish Premier League, the Political Game is similar, due to the boring way in which it's always a two horse race. ZZZzzzzz!
Maybe now the SNP are being given a slice of the action, things will change. But - corruption, brain washing and hypocrisy is rife, and spread throughout the political sphere, so theres no guarantee the slippery, fishy Mr Salmond will be any better than jack the lad.
Lets just hope that people wise up far more in the years to come, and realise their rights to information, and holding their politicians to account.
Whatever happens - 2014 is a long way off.
Lets just hope and pray that this Win for Glasgow sees more than just the politicians gain from the vast expense of promoting the city.
Affordable, sustainable housing must come from this, and a far better future health record for our city.

Cheers Missing City,
The Film sounds intrigueing!!!!
Maybe you're the next "Michael Moore" LOL ;)
Could do with some more truth and facts unveiled on our Politicians.
Maybe outdated now, but always did find this footage amusing, and more realistic:

Maybe someone will do the same type of thing for our Scottish Politicians. Salmond & co, when they've had their day......

Cheers Missing City, The Film sounds intrigueing!!!! Maybe you're the next "Michael Moore" LOL ;) Could do with some more truth and facts unveiled on our Politicians. Maybe outdated now, but always did find this footage amusing, and more realistic: http://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=C9_yv1m9j N8 Maybe someone will do the same type of thing for our Scottish Politicians. Salmond & co, when they've had their day...... [/quote] By the way - I'm no journalist
My name is Gordon
I'm just curious about a lot of things and I have lots of questions to ask - but everybody responsible for answering the questions wants to duck and dive and pass the buck.
My healthy list so far includes
Tony Blair
Jack McConnell
Rosie Kane
Charles Gordon
Gordon Jackson
Communities Scotland
These people were up until May 2007, responsible for answering the public's questions - no response was ever received - now they no longer work in the jobs they were employed in back in 2003 - with exception to Charlie Gordon - his btchers shop links meant he could become an MSP!
No end to this stuff

Have to say I agree with you, unless we look more closely at specific politicians, we will never really uncover their true agenda.
Charles kennedy seemed to me a pleasant enough man, the very fact he was outed by the party for his drink problem was unfortunate.
As by eventually admitting his weakness, I actually admired him more, not less.
Rosie Kane, (in my opinion) is a bit of an ankle biter. But, with less real charisma, and more power alongside her socialist comrades.
Since the whole SSP saga, I've lost all hope in their credability, and real agenda for change. However, Rosie's depression makes her semi-human.
As for the others Blair & McConnell - their abuse of their power, and ability to cause so many to dislike them was no mean feat! Their departure was hardly something to write home about, and I certainly wont miss either of them.
Communities Scotland, and other Quangos like them - just more proof of unelected bodies, who do little for the community, and more for the gimmicky way the Government/ Parliament want to be perceived. Less talk, more action.
So, their disbandment was innevitable.
As for us winning the Bid - I'd better add my final tuppence worth, this will not just be about financial investment. This will be about us Glaswegians bucking up our act. Showing the world stage that our record for crime stemming from binge drinking, cancer, heart disease and strokes isn't the only thing that we're infected by.
A bit more pride, respect and care of one another. Use of bins, reporting crime and vandalism will all help communities come together. So lets all start making an effort here, it's not just money that will change things.

Its the people out there who have been neglected, abandoned, socially excluded and deprived for the past 50 years which cause a lot of ignorant people driven by the media to put blame on them, when its the fault of those who have controlled what we eat, where we live, how we work - they have done little to improve the society that was on the slide from the early 70's.

[/quote] They just dont get it...Do they?

Yes well if you all think a games contest is going to change the way people are in this place, then you must all be on drugs or your simply ignorant

Nobody here is saying that this will be all bad and 100% bad for Glasgow naturally there will be some positive spin offs for Glasgow.
But, it is a case of: who really benefits here. Just how much profit is made, how and where it is re-invested, and whether the Planning departments change with the time.
Clearly council infrastructures and beurocracy that strangles the city will need to be shaken up, and seriously sorted out.
Glasgow has alot of good points to it, but the politics of it are in a state of dissaray, and its people are clearly not being listened to.

If the games was going to benefit the city as a whole then yes i would be all for it but that wont be the case..
It will be the elite, the builders , hotels etc that will reap the benefit & after its all over the average Glaswegian & Scot for that matter will be forgotten until they are looking for votes..
Nobody in their right mind can actually believe that this is going to change Glasgow for the better even though we all would like it too.
