New digital displays to be set up in city streets

by Sarah Swain

GLASGOW is one of the first cities in the world to beam information to futuristic public message boards via a mobile phone network.

Ten new hi-tech digital display units are being installed on city streets and lampposts to display information and advertising as part of a pilot scheme.

Called StreetLive, the project is a joint initiative between the city council and Streetbroadcast, the English company behind the service.

It allows the local authority to instantly update and change information on the displays via the 3G mobile phone network.

Information on weather, news and sport as well as data on projects such as Clean Glasgow, Commonwealth Games 2014 and Glasgow: Scotland with Style can be beamed to the units. Police can also use the service to offer crime prevention advice.

The 10 futuristic displays have been provided free of charge to the council as the cost is covered by the sale of advertising space.

The council will also get a portion of the income from advertisers.

Four units have already been installed on Dumbarton Road in the West End, Maryhill Road and North Hanover Street and Argyle Street in the city centre.

Six others, including units on Pollokshaws Road in Shawlands, Sauchiehall Street in the city centre, Dumbarton Road in the West End and London Road opposite Celtic Park will be in place by the end of the year.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "The Streetlive project is a pilot scheme that could be an innovative way of bringing information to the people of Glasgow. The pilot will last for a year, after which the council will examine its performance."

Police Constable Mike Crofts said: "From a police perspective, the advertising display is an effective way to get public safety information across to people in a highly visual way.

"We will be able to alert people to crime prevention measures which will help them to stay safe in a wide range of situations."

From next week, the city centre screens will also show competition-winning Christmas posters designed by children at Blackfriars Primary School in the Gorbals.

I give it about a week before one of them is smashed or otherwise vandalised - or possibly nicked to act as a 'Christmas tree' in one of the city's more salubrious housing developments.

As the city is getting geared up to look like something fromn Blade Runner - I would say that was a fair assessment.

I don't have a problem with this...Why should anyone?

The link between advertising and antisocial behavious has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt.

Its the duty for of the Government to protect its people. Even if that protection from themselves.

Incidents of violence on Dumbarton Road in the West End, Maryhill Road and North Hanover have DOUBLED since the introduction of these machines Dont we deserve our loved ones and nation to be as healthy as possible?

Naa yer ok wi that one, unless they stick that onto their list of offensive words, however the ET can print the word, but we can't use it so I'll just call it "Art Films!" which are usually Dutch or German or even Danish for that matter!

Ive seen the ad display in this feature - it looks pretty amazing. Lets see if it can survive the Glasgow Neds, or suffer the same fate of countless digital equipped bus shelters.

The one on Maryhill Road has been running for about a month now and no vandalism.

Why are you all so negative about Glasgow and it's residents?

it really would help if people posting on this topic read the story first. It clearly states in the story that the cost to the council is zero, nada, zilch, ect ect.

The one on Argyle st has been operational for about six weeks, it looks great and has suffered no vandalism. The more the better i say, we live in an information world and i think this initiative is to be applauded.

Dear o dear, me praising the coooncil, it really is the season to be jolly :-)

I think they look good. But I have seen repair men out attempting to fix the things on many occasions already. Who is footing the bill for that? They seem to be broken more than they actually work!

The unit's are paid by the advertising company, the maintenance is also done by them and costs the public and the council nowt. Advertising content pays for them basically. I think these will look better and better as people learn to use them more.

I have a problem with these, have done for some time. They have been around for weeks and I cannot bear to look at them. They flicker really badly. I dont have epilepsy or anything like that, but the flicker worries my eyes and I feel looking long enough to see the ads properly could give me a headache.

Does anyone who knows about epilepsy have any idea if my instinct here is correct?

Also what about their energy use? Not very green perchance??
