Bridge to Nowhere in vote to win £1m

Pupils from St Patrick's Primary hope the Bridge to Nowhere will be completed

by Vivienne Nicoll

PUPILS at a Glasgow primary school are flying the flag for the Bridge to Nowhere.

Today city residents can vote for an unfinished bridge to get £1million of Lottery cash for a major completion project.

Youngsters at St Patrick's Primary in Anderston have already thrown their weight behind the project.

They have written to the council urging them to finish the footbridge which ends abruptly in mid-air near the Marriot Hotel car park.

It was originally part of a 1960s planning scheme in which the bridge was to be the main pedestrian route across the motorway to the Anderston shopping centre.

However plans for the shopping centre were shelved and work on the half completed bridge was left in mid air - literally.

Today the bridge is up against a number of other projects, including the Eden Project in Cornwall, bidding for a total of £50m of Lottery cash.

Pupils from St Patrick's decided to start lobbying early and wrote to Adam Bows of the city council, who is in charge of moves to complete the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Imran Alcram, 10, wrote: "Please could you help us build the bridge to somewhere?

"It would make the community a lot happier."

Completing the Bridge to Nowhere is one of 79 schemes which form the Connect2 bid by Sustrans, the United Kingdom's leading sustainable transport charity.

A spokesman said: "The project which has the largest number of public votes will be announced live on ITV on Sunday.

"It is vital to cast your vote for Glasgow and vote for Connect2."

Councillor Ruth Simpson, the city council's executive member for land and environmental services, said: "I would urge everyone to vote."

This is a complete waste of energy and cash as the bridge leads from the portion of anderson that is soon to be demolished and stops at the other end where theres a huge building project the only place it goes is into a new office/flats development...NUTS

I see the usual negative whingers, who are opposed to every initiative or development proposed for Glasgow, have got their moans in already...

The Sustrans Connect2 scheme will benefit 79 pedestrian and cycling projects throughout the UK, one of which is completing Glasgow's bridge to nowhere.

This scheme connects the current half-finished bridge over the M8 with a second over the Clydeside Expressway to form the hub of three routes which will transform walking and cycling in central Glasgow. The second will be a garden link from Kelvingrove Park via Elderslie Street and Argyle Street, whilst the third will rearrange Waterloo Street to allow two-way cycling along this largely level road to reach the existing very high quality cycling provision at Glasgow Central. This project will go a long way to overcoming the barrier formed by the M8 which cuts through Glasgow and will not only provide a link to the riverside but also a link between the riverside promenades and the magnificent Kelvingrove Park.

All we then need is for the council to commit to the pedestrian bridge to connect to the Springfield Quay complex to transform this neglected corner of the city centre.

Bravo, Marty!

It has my vote!

This is one small part of a very worthwhile scheme. Sustrans is the only project with a Scottish element competing for the £50m so we should all get voting.

This is a great idea, I've voted for it.

'Voice of Reason' this not just about the places immediately at the two ends of the bridge, it's about the connection it would provide running from kelvingrove park through to central station, providing a quiet route that can be used by thousands of cyclist and pedestrians in safety.

You can also donate some money to Yorkhill hopspital and such worthy appeals wil always have a deeper emotional pull, but this is not about kids already in hospital, but about building a city where kids have the opportunity to exercise and stay fit, hopefully to keep them out of hospital in later life.

Shouldn't the GCC or Scottish Government be paying to finish this bridge to nowhere? Lottery money should go to genuine charity.

The problem would be keeping the neds off the completed bridge and stopping them from throwing stuff onto the M8 below.

It is a good idea but could be dangerous, the footbridges over the motoroway in the East End show how frequently this happens.

Think my overall point may have been lost....the sustrans concept is a good one... but my point was directed to the use of this structure as just a waste of time money and effort...for all the reasons i have previously mentioned not to mention those raised above by john hamilton..

But your overall point is wrong, VOR.

The bridge is at the centre of a proposed network of routes connecting the city centre, riverside and West of the city. Quite a lot of people use this route to get to work, myself included. The current provision is pretty awful, and I think that more people would use the completed bridge, as well as existing walkers/cyclists.

The city centre side of the bridge will connect with Waterloo Street and a new cycle route. It won't be affected by redevelopment of the remaining bit of 1970-s Anderston. On the West side, I'm not sure which building project you are talking about but the scheme will give access to lots of places, not just one site.

The point about neds is also wrong. There are other city centre bridges which don't suffer from the problem suggested - probably because they aren't attached to huge schemes where the neds (think they) have nothing better to do. Or do you suggest we also close the bridges at Bath Street and Sauchiehall Street?

More like this "quiet route" will be used by muggers, rapists and prossies!!!!!!!!!!
Come back into the REAL world where MOST of us live.

This is an out-right abuse of our good citizens, many of whom wont even be around that area when the redevelopment takes place.

Not only that thou isn't this bridge is forty? years old, and as you can see the railings no longer meet safety standards. Look at the child on right, easy enought for one to be foolish and climb over to their death. Did the school consult GCC health and safety department prior to the photograph?

Could also add: that the bridge could allow the red light district to spread from Anderson (if it still exsts) and every thing else that surrounds such sorley work.

The concrete has crumbled, the railings are rusty and have corroded, plus the pathway will be full of moss and very slippery - I'm really surprised the council didn't go nuts with this one, any one of the young people pictured could have slipped and had a nasty accident - probably even fatal.

All this as a result of some Lentil Curry Pie - Tree Hugging Eco Warrior Presssure Group from the West End - we'll see how good it is when some retard is oot his face oan crack and takes your bike and throws you off the bridge to the speeding traffic below because your a "Mummy's Boy" and your not used to what is lurking around the corner in the grey urban Jungle, born out of 1960's Glasgow!

IF THIS TRIPE IS TO GET MY VOTE OVER THE FANTASTIC EDEN PROJECT IN CORNWALL, THEN I MUST BE SNIFFING GLUE!

thistlemad, Leesome, The Missing City, you demonstrate a major lack of knowledge of this area and the proposals for it.

GCC is actively promoting this bid. Whatever works needs donme to bring the bridge up to scratch will have to be done.

Leesome, as your post admits, you don't know if the red light district still exists in Anderston. Well, it's much reduced on a few years ago and isn't particularly relevant to this spot anyway (you can't really kerb crawl on a bike).

As for "muggers, rapists and prossies", I'd have thought they're much more likely to use the dank, dark current spaces UNDER the motorway where we are currently forced to go. Not that I've ever seen or heard of any of them there.

And re: throwing bikes and people off bridges, well there's other bridges nearby and I'm not aware (as someone who uses this route daily) of this ever happening. It's not really that sort of location (or do you think all pedestrian bridges in Glasgow are dangerous and should be closed?).
