Signs look good for theatre
 
 

BAFTA Award-winning actress Kate Dickie was on hand to inspire the next generation of talented youngsters at the launch of Scotland's first Deaf Youth Theatre.

The actress, right, who starred in the acclaimed film Red Road for which she won her Bafta, was joined by Deborah Andrews, of the Glasgow-based theatre company Solar Bear.

Kate made the sign for theatre, while artistic director Deborah made the sign for fantastic at the launch at the Old Sheriff Court in Glasgow.

Deaf Youth Theatre has been set up by Solar Bear, thanks to a £100,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund as well as support from Glasgow City Council, Lloyds TSB and the LankellyChase Foundation.

A 10-week term of drama workshops will be open to all deaf people aged 12 to 17. From autumn next year there will also be opportunities for 17-21 year olds.

Kate said: "Having seen the work that Solar Bear has done before with young people and deaf actors and actually having witnesses the development in confidence, communication and intrepersonal skills for all those involved, I think Deaf Youth Theatre will be a huge success."

Deaf children and their families can find out more at the official launch at the Scottish Youth Theatre in the Old Sheriff Court building in Merchant City on January 10.
