Big idea to Dodge wardens

IT'S A monster of an idea to beat Glasgow's parking wardens - a vehicle so big it can't be towed away.

Millionaire businessman Alan Love parks his Dodge Ram, an all-American three-tonne pick-up truck, on double yellow lines in the city centre ... and there it stays.

Parking officials tried - and failed - to remove the monster vehicle parked illegally just yards from the entrance to Queen Street Station.

Their standard-issue tow trucks just weren't up to the job - they were smaller than Mr Love's pick-up.

All the frustrated council workers could do was slap a ticket on Mr Love - for at least the 75th time this year.

Mr Love parks one of his cars illegally almost every day - and happily pays the fine.

However, officials vowed to stop him. A council spokeswoman said: "This individual is not exempt and we will not be deterred from taking action."

The council has a cunning plan. Parking officials will soon get two monster trucks of their own, each strong enough to tow any rogue parker, however big.

Mr Love got wind of the council's move and bought the Dodge, which has the personalised plate 111UV. But will it be heavy enough?

Until earlier this month Mr Love commuted to his city centre office in his £250,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom, which he also leaves on double-yellows, earning him the nickname the Phantom Parker of Old Glasgow Town.

The Roller, which weighs two-and-a-half tonnes, was also too heavy for removal trucks.

Mr Love, who used to own the Drover's Inn near Loch Lomond and Langs Hotel in Glasgow, said he paid £150 a week in fines.

This mans arrogance is totally out of order. The council should take the biggest lorry they have and park it across his driveway and see what he does about it. I am sure he wouldn`t be slow in phoning the police to complain about it obstructing his roadway. He could find a legal place to park like the rest of us have to do and donate the £150 a week parking fines to a worthwhile charity.

I admire this guy's stance against parking wardens and the council, however, he must have more money than sense to continue to fork out £150 a week in fines.

That said, I think Smarticus should get off his soapbox judging by his support of the council.

At the end of the day, streets were built for cars, not to restrict cars from using them, but GCC have differtent ideas.

Besides, this last remaining part of Dundas Street isn't exactly a main thouroghfare, its been a dead end since the 70's with all the redevelopment that has gone on and its hardly used except to drop off goods at the shops - so why are the council determined to stop anybody from parking in this otherwise quiet part of the city centre?

I think its insane, but what's even more insane is the guy who pays those fines every week!

I hope it is not your child that gets run over due to illegal parked cars,or your business that the fire services cant reach. Its phannies like him that makes the situation worse for all of us.

Like I said, its normally a quiet street and besides what would children be doing in a rather seedy part of town - if thats the case then all modes of transport should be banned from using roads

Are YOU insane?

care for a bet?
if a child dies or a building burns down due to his car, i'll buy you a coke

Simple solution.
Blocking the highway is a criminal offence .......... jail him every time he parks.

What a tosser! Those f###king cars are annoying as hell out here and it is complete arses that drive them.
Obviously this guy has money money than sense, at 150 pounds a week that is 7800 a yr. Is he a relative of Bush who likes to spend cash just for the hell of it!! Honestly, this guy needs to get a life and find a new way to get noticed, he must have a small pe*#s!

If suggesting giving his &150 per week would be better going to charity instead of the council makes a person a City Council supporter and a baw bag then so be it. This guy abandons his 4 x 4 outside a main city centre railway station. I wonder how many narrow minded people like the comic reader biffo that applaud Love would support him if it was continually abandoned outside the front door at Glasgow Airport.

where are all these car theives when you want them? the tires could be taken off by the authorities and handed back for a fee, after all is'nt that a safety hazard ? also by obstructing the whole area which is an offence in a residential zone, finally, what a way to treat the people of scotland after helping to make mr love wealthy, shame on you.

At the end of the day, as much as I think GCC are a bunch of useless idiots, this guy is breaking the law by continually parking on double yellow lines. I don't know whether this gentleman has a point to prove, or is just simply too lazy to park legally elsewhere, but this is the sort of behaviour which is creating Glasgow's daily gridlock on the roads (i know this is a quiet, dead end street). But there are plenty of other people who take this attitude and park illegally on urban clearways everyday. No wonder I'm always late for work!

I can't believe the parking authority cannot use/rent a tow vehicle such as those that tow buses and large commercial trucks. Dodge Ram trucks are fairly common here and all drivers are expected to obey the law regardless of their financial status. Such trucks are regarded as driven by men with a small penis complex. Probably, as long as he pays the fines, nothing can be done about him. I'm sure, as here, there are many other drivers acquiring many tickets each week but it isn't newsworthy because they do not drive such vehicles.

the guy can obviously afford to park where he likes the council should continue letting him park where he likes am sure they would miss the £150 a week they make from him.

Someone who displays this level of arrogance really, severely needs a good slapping. I despise it when people think they're above the law just because they have money.
From the look of the guy, it's just as well he's got money, I doubt he'd get a bird otherwise.
Posted by: horatio, glasgow on 9:39am Wed 19 Dec 07
I agree, Glamkitty, this guy wouldn't be doing this if he wasn't a millionnaire.

As I said earlier, I admire someone standing up to GCC and its costly parking system, but, in the end, the council are the ones benefitting to the tune of a £150 a week.

Posted by: glamkitty, Glasgow on 9:43am Wed 19 Dec 07
And as for his car - yet more proof (if any was needed) that money can't buy you taste.
The man, and his car, are vulgar in the extreme.

Smarticus, of course the guy is a clown but to whinge on about it puts you in the same division..How come the airport gets brought in to it, would this be a nod to the inept terrorists who hit Glasgow airport in the summer?, oh so topical

i seen this guy on the NEWS!!! OMG now this is how important it was that Scotland today could not be bothered to do something more productive and focus on Cristmas, charities and local kids who are all over Glasgow working very hard to provide a nice xmas to all. I had kids dressed up visiting my house singing with stewards and a double decker open top bus which was full of lights..you may have had it in your area collecting for charity. How amazing it was below 0 degrees that evening only a couple of days ago in the evening and these kids and adults were out doing an amazing job...why cant the BBC/ITV from Glasgow go and focus on something very worthwhile other than this man who has plenty of money to burn. He states he has a RR Phantom which cost in the region of £200,000 for a car. Many people do not have a house at that value yet this very ignorant man is out to make a stance. Well why not drive a less expensive car and park in buchanan galleries, pay park like the rest of us, st enouch car parking or the numerous NCP parkings there are in the city centre. More so i am aware you can also put in an application for a parking pay in city centre from the council and pay a very large annual fee something like £8000 odds which is affordable for this man. Ok respect to him for making his money and he is successful but there is no need to go about acting like this is your dads land dude. I totally agree with the quotes above which are fire and safety hazards. People do not want to see this kind of stupidity in our streets, are we not ment to be setting a higher standard for our tourists who may or may not want to some to Glasgow and now with the games we have won its not on and really action can easily be taken but as said before the GCC are happy to take his money when they can easily hire trucks to remove this dude and make more off him in one day to release his car duno how much that is but its over £100 i think.....

Were are the neds when you need them...come on boys set about the car man!!! only kidding ment to be a light hearted joke. :o)

Can't they just get a few jacks on wheels, crank it up a couple of inches, and then just tow it away?
Posted by: Gazza, Glasgow on 2:51pm Wed 19 Dec 07
Hopefully the Neds will now be alert to this vehicle and natural justice will run its course.

Posted by: People Power, Glasgow on 6:22pm Wed 19 Dec 07
Is this man to get some kind of congratulations ?

Seems to me he's had more than enough publicity.

Despite his ability to pay up, as well as dodge having his car towed, owing to it's weight. Surely this shows the absolute failures of GCC in dealing with all vehicle types.

Really - if this is the only kind of news stories that the E.T. can come up with "You" need to sack, and re - employ quality journalists.

Although - when G.C.C. is made to look bad in any way, shape or form and by the E.T. noless, it is nothing short of a miracle.

Maybe theres hope for the electorate, and people of Glasgow yet, or maybe the E.T. are starting to see that it's cosying up to GCC / New Labour has run its course - I certainly hope so!

I just remembered. It read in one of the newspapers - 'Mr Love also owns a £250,000 Rolls Royce'. This would be the same Rolls Royce that Mr Love used to abandon in the bus lane outside his old hotel, Lang's - Also on double yellow lines.
Posted by: trench, possilpark on 10:59pm Wed 19 Dec 07
would mr love not be more in pocket if he hired a taxi, or even hired someone to drive for him, also someone could be a minder for him so as his 'big hoose on wheels'would not be tampered with... its like ...a fool and their money are easily parted, give the kids a hurl and give them a pound each for christmas.(ah dare ye.)

I thought the GCC was a worthwhile charity - it does sterling work keeping all those workshy incompetants out of the real world where, if let loose they might actually cause some damage and maybe, just maybe do a days work....
