Subway tunnel terror

One passenger's mobile phone camera captured the drama as fellow travellers emerged from their Subway ordeal

DOZENS of passengers were forced to walk through an underground tunnel after a Subway train broke down.

Passengers on the busy Inner Circle service were stranded after the train came to a sudden halt between St Georges Cross and Kelvinbridge stations.

After 20 minutes, the driver told the 76 passengers they would have to walk to the back of the train and along the track to Kelvinbridge station.

The fault led to the suspension of the Inner Circle for around 90 minutes yesterday afternoon.

Hundreds of people were forced to use the Outer Circle or make alternative travel arrangements.

Passenger Johnny Laff, who was travelling between Buchanan Street and Kelvin Hall, said: "After waiting for 20 minutes we were told the train had conked out.

"It took about five minutes walking in the cold and muck to get to Kelvinbridge, which wasn't very pleasant, especially as I don't like enclosed spaces.

"Some people got a bit panicky."

Mr Laff, who is starring in panto as Buttons at the Pavilion theatre, said he was disappointed at not being offered more help by Subway staff.

He added: "When we got to Kelvin we were told either we'd need to get back on the Outer Circle and travel round all the other stations, or make our own way.

"We didn't even get a refund.

"I ended up walking. What should have been a 10-minute journey took me an hour-and-a-half."

An SPT spokesman said: "Due to a breakdown we had to close the Inner Circle for an hour-and-a-half.

"The priority of our staff was to get the 76 passengers safely to Kelvinbridge station and offer them advice on their onward journey.

"Services were back up and running at 3.30pm, in time for the rush-hour."

The incident came almost a year after dozens of terrified passengers were forced to flee a train and walk half-a-mile along a Subway tunnel in darkness.

Pensioners and schoolchildren were among more than 90 commuters who made the 10-minute walk to Partick after smoke filled the carriages shortly after the train left Govan in January.

Four years earlier, dozens of commuters also had to walk through a tunnel when a Subway train broke down on the Inner Circle near Kelvinbridge station.

was John MacLean not there to help?

get on with it people - the train broke down and you had to walk....

Look, the thought of a five-minute walk with no mobile phone reception is horrifying enough to give some Scottish teenagers a heart attack - and I'm stunned none of them got stuck in the tunnel.

Exactly, the train broke down boohoo. You would be moaning if they left you in a train with a problem for 90 minutes.

Oh and the reason that he never got a refund was that he got on the other circle.

Whenever Im travelling and its suspended you either get a refund or use the other circle.

Get over it. People are dying all over the world and hes moaning cause he got dirty. Man oh man!!!

Sensationalist, tabloid, CR@P journalism. No wonder the Evening Times is the laughing stock of big city evening 'news'papers!

The (Labour-biased) management should read a copy of Manchester's Evening News or London's new thelondonpaper to see how it should be done.

For God's sake, can we please have a decent, grown up, non-trashy evening paper for Glasgow? This is just pathetic and cringe-inducing tabloid garbage.

Presumably the staff should have arranged a fleet of taxis for the poor passengers, had the WRVS set up a tea stall on the platform, and arranged for psychologists to give counselling...
But what really puzzles me is this....
After 20 minutes, the driver told the 76 passengers they would have to walk to the back of the train and along the track to Kelvinbridge station.

...is it just me or if the passengers had got off at the back of a train on the Inner Circle train, they would have been walking to St Georges Cross, not Kelvinbridge....

Hardly Subway terror is it?

could journalistic licence not have allowed reference to some giant rats, or even stretching to a mutant crocodile, thus introducing a dramatic element to this otherwise paltry story?

Love the "Subway Terror" headline. Poor "Johnny Laff" who took the pictures must have led a sheltered life. If you think that was "Terror" Johnny, then I strongly suggest you dont go into Glasgow City Centre at night.

Is this story for real??? What the hell does panto characters have to do with anything??
I would imagine that this sort of thing would offer a much welcomed bit of excitement on what would otherwise be a mundane and boring tube experience. Maybe that's just the youth in me trying to get out!!!

please report accurately on what happened,as the duty stationmaster at Kelvinbridge these are the facts, the driver tried unsuccesfully to restart the train after ten minutes I was instructed to detrain the passengers to Kelvinbridge, THE REASON IT TOOK FIVE MINUTES TO WALK TO THE STATION WAS THE LEADING COUPLE WERE VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND YOU CAN ONLY MOVE AS FAST AS THE SLOWEST PERSON, the passenger who got dirty must have been on his hands and knees (maybe after a sherry or two)the tunnel was well light and dry. please do not exaggerate what was a mundane occurrence, maybe your reporter needs to take lessons in investigations

Aye The Bouncy Bouncy - It's dangerous, said The Evening Times!!

They've smashed up the axles of their wee orange subway trains and the things are clapping oot in the tunnels - aye looks like the Bouncy Bears are gonny huv tae get the bus very soon.

To round things off, the subway requires modernisation - lets face it, Kelvin Hall should be re-named Partick Cross - it's a 1/4 mile walk from the station and son the Kelvin Hall will be no more as its turned into luxury flats (at least that's what I heard)

The only official quotes you get from SPT are:

We work when we want to.
We spend your money when WE want to.
We need more money.
We know what we are doing (sic!)
Don't speak to us on a Sunday after 6.30pm.

Oh dear! What is all this! The front page has gone bonkers! Evening Times leaps on this story and blows it out of ALL proportion. A 20 minute wait then a five minute walk. Clearly they have never experienced the London Underground. But alas, the last thing we want is the Orange talking after its bigger sibbling. The bad news just seems to pile up on the poor old thing, no thanks to the Evening Times who seems to hate it with a vengance. It's about time the council threw a bit more cash (if it can find it) at it. Perhaps a change of oil or re-introduce the ancient cable system is used to run on.

Mr Culley didn`t know but he will now, heres a thought if Mr Laff had a problem why did he not make the complaint directly to the SPT instead of going to a newspaper, something to do with him being in panto no doubt

jefstewa, you`ve hit the nail on the head we can only work with the tools we are given, if the evening times would get behind Mr Culleys attempt to procure major investment in the subway instead of trying to do it down at every turn we could have a system which we could be proud of and would serve us well inti the 21st century.

That is a bit of a strong comment considering some decent people use the subway!

For instance, all the nice ladies with their knee high boots and lovely hairdo's who head into the West End aren't exacrly Buckfsat swilling Tracksuit Junkies with no fcuking teeth - but that's doesn't mean to say that half of them are not insane b1tches either!

Got to agree with workinhard here!

Waste your time on some other online tabloid muck - but if the E.T. is really that bad - whats the point wither reading, or continuing to slate it ? Seems a bit silly to me!

Just think this is again proof how pathetic our 111 year old "Toy - Town" Subway System is.

Councillor Alistair Watson Chairman of SPT can throw as much spin, and rhetorick at us as he likes - but until we see real proof of imminent investment in our decrepit Subway System, nothing will ever change.

Less talk - and more action!

And for those who wish to get into the City Centre quicker where appropriate - can I recommend the Low Level trains into the City Centre.

Another tip - share - pass on your " Discovery Ticket" once finished with it - and give someone else the benefit of it.
Until SPT can have a more efficient system of fares for how far people are travelling on the Subway - Passengers should make every penny count - or in this case every "Discovery Ticket!"

Love how this forum degenerates into slagging matches, and competetive one liners or puns.

Apart from anything else - do the E.T. even bother to read, pay attention to or make alterations according to what we say ?

Maybe we could have some feedback from the Webmaster please . . . . Not too much to ask surely ?

Notice in the Metro Forum, ( no defunct) the Webmaster would post comments / or feedback.

Perhaps we need this here!!!!

Otherwise - where is the point in people letting off steam, or moaning this way!

Councillors, or MSP's may well be useless - but grill them too - and at least know you've been down that avenue before you completely rule it out.

Perhaps its time the E.T. printed the surgery times, and profiles of our Councillors from A - Z to give us a full account of exactly what our Councillors have been doing for us to date ?

That would make far more interesting reading surely ?

Anyone else think we should target them more.

People of low self-esteem, who think that criticism is a solution to a problem, and who think that ranting and the odd swear-word will get them admired are just pathetic.
If you consider the ET to be gutter journalism, all I can say is "people in glass houses should'nt throw stones".

As for Power Stations - when we run out of coal / nuclear fuel - lets just incinerate our overweight policiticans, and Councillors.
The energy / heat generated from them would keep us all toasted in our houses for donkeys years! Bunch of silly a*sses the lot of them!
Meanwhile it's those who work hardest - teachers, nurses, and public service staff that get hee haw! ( pardon the pun!) LOL ;)
Better watch - any sharper & I'll cut myself! LOL ;)

People Power, details of Councillors' surgeries are available on the Council website and in the magazine regularly delivered to most homes in the city. There is no need for the Evening Times to print those details or for the Council to pay for advertising space.

I am well aware of this fact - but just how many people bother to access this info.
And - another thing have you seen how poorly designed the council website is ?
It's an absolute disaster area. And is very poorly designed.

As for the Council Magazine - who bothers to read that crap.

Why not have specific details of what Councillors are doing for their electorate as a main column / feature in the E.T.
Maybe then people might actually read or pay attention to it.

As for the cost - dont make me laugh!
GCC has wasted so much of our taxes on promoting the Commonwealth Bid, printing thousands of copies of that colourful Glasgow Magazine that most folk probably don't even bother to read.
Why not give people the option of being taken off the mailing list for it, and having that made clear in the "Glasgow" Magazine.
GCC is throwing money away every day on some new ridiculous initiative.

By the way - johnny Punchclock - if it's so easy to find out Councillor Christopher Mason's Surgery. As 7 months later - and he still hasn't set any times or dates . . .
Yet - he still has the cheek to claim his wages, expenses, and act like he's representing his electorate.

bigcrispyheid - are you saying you disagree with this statement above ?

I'd say Meep This is the straw that broke the camel's back. The SPT board and the head managment of the Subway all need sacked. This scenario shows that the people in charge of the Subway are not competent to do their job. New SPT board and new management at the Subway please. Now!! is spot on here!

A drastic overhaul is needed here!

And Councillor Alistair Watson Chairman of SPT isn't much better! Lets not make out the staff of SPT / Glasgows Subway are totally innocent here, or in no way to blame for this mess.

Better and longer opening / working hours to start with, and a fresh perspective on how Glasgow Subway is operated, maintained, and run.

NOT ALOT TO ASK IS IT ?

A Change of mindset is alot cheaper than the huge plans that are supposedly in the pipeline.
But as they are all talk, and have no guaranteed funding - their all theory, and nothing more!

Leave Meep alone ;-(

Without wanting to sound rude, I wouldn't expect someone so well educated from somewhere as upmarket as Kilbarchan to read the E.T.
If you don't like the comments on this - dont' read them, perhaps you should stick to the Herald.

Anyway - thisis a light hearted and comical forum, for those who are not easily offended.
The likelyhood of anything coming from it, other than quoted letters printed in the paper are the most we can expect.

Notify local Councillors to read the threads, maybe then they'd start sitting up, and taking action, if they knew the real feeling of some of the people from these Comments pages.

See it as something to broaden your mind, and entertain - if it annoys those who complain about the comments so much no one is forcing them to read it.

Once again, the Evening Times is making a mountain out of a mole hole. If the reporters are not having a go at First Bus, then they are having a go at the Subway. So much that has appeared about the transport over the last few years has beeen sensationalised and distorted.

The Subway has had these safety procedures in place for over 70 years and they were approved by the Railway Inspectorate and the Health and Safety Executive. As part of the 1970s modernisation, the tunnel flooring was slabbed throughout to make it easier to walk on and permanent emergency lighting was installed which is far better than the former clip-on bulbs. I travelled almost every day on the old Subway and in the last year or so when tunnel breakdowns were at least a weekly occurence, much to my regret, I never had to walk through the tunnel. The amount of tunnel breakdowns is nowhere near that of the old Subway and if there was such terror, people would have been screaming and trampling each other underfoot. Instead, the photograph shows passengers, in an orderly manner, being helped up the ladder onto the platform by the staff according to procedures.
If Mr Laff (a stage name?) doesn't like enclosed spaces I am sure he would be more uncomfortable inside a crowded train than in an airy tunnel. As has already been pointed out, if he had a complaint he should have made it to SPT and not the Evening Times.
The incident earlier in the year was similarly sensationalised with passengers allegedly stumbling through the dark tunnel to reach safety.

There is a big difference between desire and demand. While most people desire a Sunday evening service, the demand is simply not there as is shown by the loadings on the Subway Nightrider buses. Perhaps if People Power was not passing on his ticket, in breach of the conditions, SPT would have more money to finance such a service. As the Evening Times sees such a need for this why does it not offer to subsidise it and publicise it to see if the demand does exist? It is not the staff who are opposed to this but the paymasters, who, while they feel justified in going on fact finding trips to look at fancy systems abroad, at least are sufficiently aware that council tax payers are not willing to pour money down a bottomless Tube. Driverless trains may be seen as desirable by some, but when breakdowns occur, as they inevitably will, that is when there are likely to be more serious consequences.

If incidents are so sensationalised these days, I seriously wonder whether I have to take the news of 100 years ago with a pillar of salt.
I am surprised nobody has complained to the Press Coucil about distorted reporting.

Hey, The Missing City,
These Councillors / Politicians don't scare me!
Sure by the way their slated, and criticised many others are as apathetic, disgruntled, and put off by the whole political system.

Maybe I should start paying into a Private Helathcare Policy - as at least that way I don't have to put up with the sloppy levels of care, and understaffed, underfunded NHS Hospitals.
